This is a non-starter. Microsoft’s been on desk for anti-trust and security issues before. You can’t fix personal habits, and Microsoft shouldn’t have to.
I’m far from an MS fanboy, but I am a Windows server engineer. I administer numerous domains including a mixed-mode Linux/Server 2012 domain in my own home. Microsoft products do what they do. If you want ironclad security, go buy a product from Symantec or use one of the myriad free AV programs and for God’s sake, be a little bit more discriminant about whose emails you open.
If grandma doesn’t normally send you emails with attachments, don’t open one when you get it!

Methinks none. I also think you were not paying attention to what is going on.
Here's why. When 8.1 upgrade was released, I downloaded it the next day but could not install it(dreaded xxxx12 error message). As a result, I was NOT able to get ANY security patches for Windows 8 because there weren't any anymore. "Remedies" Microsoft provided on their website were completely useless and reminded me of Windows 3.11 time joke about an aviator being lost and landing on Microsoft campus.
As a desperate measure, I had to uninstall Windows, install fresh Windows 8, dowload and apply 96 (!) patches and then install Windows 8.1 upgrade, and all my software applications.
What a waste of time. Because of the Microsoft shoddy product, I had to spend the entire Saturday working on this. My time is worth at least $400, more than Microsoft charges for Windows. Good thing is I was able to do it alone and not having to pay someone to do it for me.
If you are still on Windows 8.0 your PC is at risk.
Many users with Florida temperature IQ will not be able to apply the upgrade because the upgrade does not work on many machines.
If you don't know what I am talking about, Bing is your friend :-) Search for error 80073712". Perfect example how useless Microsoft help is.

I’m not that familiar with Office document viruses. I think most relate to macros, and once again, these can’t affect the system or its installed programs as long as executed within a limited user account.
Not sure what you mean about “backed up to admin space”. Macros are embedded in the documents themselves, but do no harm unless the document is opened. Copying the document to an administrator account would not be harmful (or particularly helpful for that matter), but if/when the document was opened in an administrator account, it would be harmful to the system.
I use XP as a utility OS only...games, Quicken, video/audio, etc. Email and Web access are via Linux. Works like a charm.
I'll never give another dime to Microsoft.
Watch out for Robolinux. Do the research. There is a size limit on your Windows boot partition. I forget what the limit is but my 250Gb C: drive is too large and I refuse to resize in order to get it to work. The limit is too small. I think it is 100Gb...but it is mentioned in the Robolinux install guides. Plus...forget gamimg on a XP VM.

Make sure you are in the right section if refering to the consumer support (vice Business and Developer support) . From the link you provide in the "Consumer and Mujltimedia products"::
"Extended Support is not offered for Consumer and Multimedia products"
Standard support for the consumer is 5 years, from your link....so Windows 7 is nearing end of life by that definition.
That always amuses me when people say that about something they are doing on their own time.
OK. How much it would cost ME to hire YOU to format drive, install W8 and its 96 updates, then update W8 to W 8.1 and last not least install and configure some 20 software apps.
That's how much this is worth.
I did it on my own time, but not for my own pleasure. I did it because of the buggy 8.1 update that can not install itself.
If it costs you “at least $400” to do your own chores and puttering, then by all means hire people to do everything else in your life.
Personally, I separate my own chores and puttering from what I charge customers when I am working.
Yeah, my bad; my update went fine. I still see it not as a shakedown, but as a garden-variety MS screwup.
The lack of objectivity, such as the many problems with his presumed alternatives, and that one can run Windows for years with extensive Internet use without any real problems with malware, weakens his case against MS.

But thank God for computers in general, and what an OS can enable for good.
I also went from XP to W/8, as explained here , and with Classic Shell it is like XP but overall better. But read thru the above for some other tips.

But why even use IE except for updates. Firefox, actually Pale Moon , which is far far superior to IE, and Chrome if you are a "power user." There is even an extension than can enable posting in HTML here easier for those who do not know it (or have stiff fingers like me).
've avoided LINUX because people have said you'll spend a lot of time learning it, configuring it etc.
This is quite true despite hype, some more so than others, often even if you want to do most of what you can rather easily do with Windows, unless its just Internet and Word processing. In addition is the illegality of certain proprietary multimedia codecs. I found Xubuntu to be best for older hardware.
