That’s the beauty of the game. You don’t have to be a huge, sports-minded powerhouse country to field a good soccer team.

American weakness is not compelling TV to me. If I liked watching that, I'd be watching Obama's foreign policy speeches...

It does help to have a larger population base to draw from. Of the 32 countries, only 6 have fewer than 10 million inhabitants. Four have fewer than 5 million: Uruguay, Croatia, Costa Rica, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Muslim world did not fare well. Two countries on the list where almost everyone is Muslim (Iran and Algeria). Nigeria is about 50% Muslim, Bosnia about 40%, and Ivory Coast 39%. No others where Muslims are above 20% of the population.
