I have no idea how to fly plane, but if he turned all the communication ‘systems’ in the plane off, would this have affected his navigation? People are too reliant on technology now in general - would a young pilot (the other pilot) struggle to reach his target (Petronas Towers, or Bombay perhaps) without communication with the ground? He could have simply spent Saturday morning searching for Land in the Indian Ocean before running out of fuel
He does sound like a gay activist or even political lightning rod. But, any opposition is provocative to a single party that has ruled for 50 years.

The pilots may have had good reason to turn it off to identify the fire source. Or fire induced electrical short may have popped the circuit breaker. I have background experience back in the early sixties as an Air Force aircraft mechanic. C-133 and C-124; both four engine birds.
He was way too far away to have seen anything relevant, unless everything we've been told is BS.
