I have been a coin collector for a long time. I have NEVER run across a gold coin that was not worth MORE than the gold it contained. Never.
There may be a mistaken presumption that these were coins with some collectible value. But I don't think that has been established. Perhaps they were something like standard APMEX gold rounds (1oz or less)? Would those sorts of gold coins ever be worth more than the spot price?

You are correct. I should have said American mint issued gold coin.
