The Daytona 500 has been a delayed, drawn-out mess ever since it left CBS and lights were installed. It gets more long and drawn-out every year.

They should tear the lights down and move back to CBS and start an hour earlier like they used to.

tear the lights down

So those poor folks who go to the 400 in July can go back to baking in the sun?

Thanks!

Great to see the Junior win.
I’ve always thought he was a top notch driver.
Not as good as Dad.
But darn well qualified to be running Cup.

NP

I was waiting for the “official” list thinking that it was out at 10:00AM EST but I must be thinking of Indy 500.

I know one thing- He needs to STOP helping the 5/24/48 on the track because they NEVER help Him.

It’s TIME FOR THAT 1st CUP CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

On the bummer side I restarted the DVR last night at 20:45 and at a Nissan ad the damned thing stopped recording and locked up on the ad.

Now I have to wait for the Re-air on Friday:O(

Yup. A real true-believer even when times were tough for Jr. Thought of her last night when Jr. won. Hope she saw the race.

Starting the slow transition to Spring here. Tulips have broken the surface in some parts of the yard. Other parts of the yard still have left-over snow and ice.

Okay then, how about they at least start an hour earlier and simply agree if they can't get the entire race in early to postpone it to the next day?

Earnhardt Jr. installs the winning #88 National Guard Chevy at DIS: Two-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. is ready to tell the world the story of his epic victory in Sunday night’s 56th annual Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory at Daytona International Speedway. Running on only one hour of sleep, Earnhardt Jr. embarked on his week-long whirlwind media tour Monday morning after installing his #88 National Guard Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet inside the Daytona International Speedway Ticket and Tours Building. The car will be part of the Daytona International Speedway tours program and will be returned to the team at the 2015 Daytona 500, a tradition that has been in existence since 1996. Earnhardt, crew chief Steve Letarte, team owner Rick Hendrick and the crew of the #88 car enjoyed a breakfast with the media and participated in interviews and pictures on Monday morning.
“I was taking pictures and doing media until about 3 a.m.,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “The team was having most of the fun. When I got over there, they were out of spirits so we found some more and we just sat around and talked about how cool it was - just punching each other in the shoulder until about 4 a.m. and then I had to hang it up.”
During the Champion’s Breakfast, Speedway President Joie Chitwood presented all three Daytona 500 champions with their leather jackets, Hendrick with his Harley J. Earl Daytona 500 trophy and Letarte with the Cannonball Baker trophy. Chitwood and Earnhardt Jr. also unveiled the logo for next year’s 57th annual Daytona 500.
The Champion’s Breakfast isn’t the only obligation that comes with winning “The Great American Race.” Earnhardt Jr. will fly across America making stops in places such as New York City, ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut and Los Angeles.
“I’m looking forward to it and I want to enjoy it,” said Earnhardt Jr., who will be appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman on Monday night. “We won a big race, we put a lot of effort into it and I’m going to make sure everybody hears about it.”
“This race is such a big deal,” said Letarte. “The whole thing felt pretty surreal. What races do you still celebrate the next day? You have a breakfast and keep getting trophies and jackets. I’m proud of the team we’ve assembled. They’re a great group of guys and deserve most of the credit. They built a great race car, Dale drove a great race and we’re excited.”
“That was a perfect race,” agreed Hendrick, who is enjoying his eighth Daytona 500 win as an owner. “That was a perfect race. Dale - I’ve never seen anybody drive a car (like that). He drove the wheels off the car every lap. Stevie called a perfect race, pit stops were perfect and TJ (Majors) did an unbelievable job up there spotting. I’m so proud.”
Earnhardt Jr. was asked to sum up the feeling of winning the Daytona 500 for a second time. “This place just has a lot of great history,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “It’s a great race track. You drive into it and you get a special feeling you don’t get anywhere else. As soon as you drive through the tunnel you know where you’re at. There are some great facilities and unique tracks and places we go that I have a lot of appreciation for, but nothing like Daytona. Once you win it, it’s like a color TV - once you watch color TV for the first time, you don’t want to go back to black and white. When I won it for the first time (in 2004), I just couldn’t wait to get back to Victory Lane.”(DIS)(2-24-2014)

What happened to Tony Stewarts car in Daytona 500? After a six-hour and 22-minute rain delay subdued the momentum of the Daytona 500, a fuel pressure issue subdued #14-Tony Stewart's run in the season-opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway. He finished 35th. The problem reared its head on lap 94 when Stewart radioed to crew chief Chad Johnston that his fuel gauge was "jumping all around" and that his engine "laid down" on exit of the track's corners. Stewart tried to wait the problem out until a caution appeared, but the problem worsened and Stewart was forced to pit under green on lap 101 of the 200-lap race. Johnston and Co. opened the trunk where the fuel cell and associated electronics are located. Stewart shut off his racecar, switched batteries and then restarted his #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS. With no indications of a problem, Stewart headed back onto the racetrack where on lap 105 he said, "So far, so good." A moment later, however, Stewart said he spoke too soon. The problem remained. Stewart returned to pit road on lap 117 and didn't return to the track until lap 128. The problem persisted and, finally, Stewart was forced to bring his car to the garage with 70 laps remaining. There, the team replaced the fuel cell and all its electronic pieces. It was an intensive effort that took time, with Stewart pulling out of the garage on lap 146. While many laps down, the problem was solved. Stewart logged laps and took advantage of the attrition of others, rising from 42nd when he made his first unscheduled pit stop to finishing 35th when the checkered flag waved.(TSC/SHR)(2-24-2014)

Have You ever been to a Race?

For some Folks this or any other Race that You might just watch on TV at home is The Family Vacation. They travel great distances incurring not just the cost of the Race Ticket(s) but: Fuel or Air Travel expenses, Lodging, meals and time off of work and/or school.

Not everybody can just call work and say “hey boss the race was held over so I won’t be there as planned- huh? what? I’m Fired!?”

In 2012 I/We had the foresight to plan for such a thing- and it’s good We did because the Race never got started on Sunday and rolled to Prime time Monday and lasted till 02:00 Tuesday. We bail out fast and left the parking lot at 02:15 headed back to N.C.

Let’s be realistic.

Racing is paid for by television these days.
$800m per year or thereabouts for Nas.

How many tv viewers do they get on Monday morning vs. Sunday night prime time?

At least out here in California, the race ended just before the closing ceremonies at Sochi were being broadcast.
