Look at the face of old man winter near Chicago in this NASA (use control + for a closer look, control - to get back to normal) image. This was taken 2/13 before the big southern storm.

Yup. My first thought was that it was an artifact.

It’s “strange” only because in some peoples’ minds it resembles the letter S.

In reality, it is not strange. In reality, it is a normal phenomenon.

Like the “face” on Mars that wasn’t a face, people see things that they want to see that aren’t there.

Besides, it’s not a very good letter S.

It’s too symmetrical to be anything natural or random. If a jet had to waste some time, this shape would be about right. If the air was in an unstable equilibrium, the contrail could have upset it and produced something the radar saw.

I’ve working as a radar engineer for over 30 years, spent a couple modeling and peddling weather radar, and can pretty much guarantee that that is not a meteorologic or propagation artifact. My bet (speculation) is either a software artifact, perhaps a test pattern used by the software developers, or a prank, possibly an Easter egg planted by a software developer, or a joke by the operators.

For what it's worth, it occurred to me that this location is at the antipodes of the American eastern seaboard.

Nessie takes a vacation, or a wrong turn in one of those underwater tunnels.
