Most of what people love about the Fifties -- Elvis, James Dean, Brando, rockabilly, beatniks, Kerouac and Ginsberg, hot rods, motorcycle gangs, etc. -- comes from the rebels and misfits and nonconformists of the era.
Well, okay, the cars and tailfins were pretty mainstream, and some people do really love suburbia or early TV, but the Fifties many people lived aren't cult objects in the same way that the fringe culture of the era is.
