Indeed, the Russians are not re-writing history as much today as their former Western dupes and fellow travelers, doing it to protect their own egos, careers, and reputations based on past pronouncements. Where are the fools and expert Sovietologists who in 1988 proclaimed in the New York Times that the Soviet Union was the healthiest it’s ever been economically?
Maybe hats should be mandated for the economy...

The “peace” bit gives it away. Communist activists in non-communist countries found it hard, and economically inadvisable, to come out and admit they were communists so they became involved in promoting “peace”, I mean who can object to peace? The peace oddly enough was a rather one-sided type of peace and it usually involved leaving communists alone in peace while at the same time blithely ignoring the violence committed by communist regimes.
They set up “peace groups”, funded “peace studies”, awarded “peace prizes” that oddly enough always favoured communists and pushed communist ideology. It’s odd that although Chaplin believed in peace at the same time he demanded a second front (apparently fighting the Nazis in the sea, in the air and in Italy and North Africa didn’t count) where ill-prepared western armies would be landed in France in 1942 or 1943 to be slaughtered by the Nazis while the Soviets got stronger and stronger. Funny sort of peace.
We can see the same thing today when anti-American activists never call themselves anti-American activists, they are always peace-campaigners or anti-war activists.
Chaplin was a commie fifth columnist, whether he was a useful idiot or a committed Red I will leave to the judgment of others.
Thanks for posting that. Makes the photo all the more interesting.
I explained to my son that in the first half of the 20th century - in the wake of Darwin and evolution - Marxism seemed to be the natural movement of history; Marxist egalitarianism and failing capitalism appeared as natural as the rise of man and the extinction of the dodo bird.
This explains the Spanish Civil War and how so many popular artists and writers joined the side they believed in. It explains the Cambridge spy ring [Burgess, Maclean, Philby, Blunt] recruited from the British upper class. It helps to explain how FDR watched the State Dept. fill up with Communists. In the light of the Great Depression Marxism appeared to be the obvious outcome.
The bloom began to fade off the rose when Stalin made the Non-aggression Pact with Hitler; Hitler was considered amongst Marxist disciples to be the demonic enemy. Up to that time the honest media had sort of ignored Stalin's excesses - the cause was more important not like today.
Of course Stalin was an ally of the good side in WWII... we all pulled together to defeat fascism.
The Nuclear Age put an abrupt end to Marxist fantasies; while many devotees remained faithful, the rank and file fell away when Stalin attained the bomb. The threat of death seemed more real than Darwinist ideals.

As to Hollywierd: Michael Moore is the poster boy for all this elitist stupidity. He has become a millionaire off of American popular culture, but he believes all would be better under an idealist totalitarianism -- i.e. an idiot! Would Moore go to Cuba and give up his wealth, or try to earn it under Castro-ism? HA HA HA!
But for the unwashed masses: good alternative! Yikes!
When I google “Charlie Chaplin” the early links are his official page, Wikipedia, IMDB, Youtube...
