To estimate the scale of such a failure, report co-author John Kappenmann of the Metatech Corporation looked at the great geomagnetic storm of May 1921, which produced ground currents as much as ten times stronger than the 1989 Quebec storm, and modeled its effect on the modern power grid.
He found more than 350 transformers at risk of permanent damage and 130 million people without power.
The loss of electricity would ripple across the social infrastructure with water distribution affected within several hours; perishable foods and medications lost in 12-24 hours; loss of heating/air conditioning, sewage disposal, phone service, fuel re-supply and so on.

commerce systems no longer functionedI'll pick at that one. As long as humans have something to trade, commerce will continue.
I, of course, am ready to trade home-grown tobacco or beer for teen-age girls that can pull a plow, silver coins, or .22LR ammo (No Russian Steel Case). And that's just during the Obama regime...

We are going to need a global government and a tax on fuel in order to protect ourselves.

estimated that some nine out of ten Americans would be dead within one year Well then, heck -- everyone only needs a single shot weapon. That'll do her when time comes to put out their own lights.

I'm avoiding fiat currencies. Including federal reserve notes.
The Romans used a sponge on a stick for toilet paper... just sayin....

It was less frightening when you were 'ever so screwed'. Boggles the mind to think of you foot-loose and fancy-free in a post-apocolyptic world.

I for one am very pleased that you are so not screwed. The thought of a dystopian wasteland without Laz is too much to bear.

sadly I don’t think it would take a year for 9 out of 10 to die.
Search for 9 meals to anarchy. Few would make it past 30 days.
death rates would be close to 99% among certain geographies and attitudes/cultures. other ares would survive and eventually thrive again, albeit at a slower pace than today.
Plus a lot of people would have to trade their city-boy hands for working-man hands.

Would such a solar event be hemispherical in nature, or global?

The proton event was sub light speed, obviously, but very fast, so 7M mph seems about right. It is charged particles after all, and not EM radiation.
At least that's what we were taught at culinary school.

Can't ever have enough .22LR.

Slower then the speed of light, because its particles I think.

I think the Carrington Event in 1859 was hemispherical, in that it affected North America only with telegraph lines catching on fire, etc...
Also the 1989 event didn't give rise to reports at the antipodes.

To: MHGinTN
I think the initial effects would be whichever side of the earth was facing the sun when the particles hit.
Probably some bleed over and secondary damage
