Carol didn't protect the group, she fractured it. If there is anything clear from what happened, it is that. This is her fault. She was stupid for doing it, and she was stupid for confessing it.
As for the decision to expel her, there was no other alternative. Everyone in the group has to have absolute faith and confidence in the other members of the group. If people in the group are afraid that other members in the group are going to off them once they become a perceived liability, the group will fracture and dissolve into in-fighting. Carol had to go in order to show the other members of the group that this sort of behavior won't be tolerated. No question about it.
