I’ve been following the articles and documentaries on this for 8-10 years, and it makes me gleeful to think of all the snobs of the Asians-were-first debate who now find that Indians/Native Americans were/are a mixed race after all-at least for the last 10,000 or so years. Cancel the reparations for one and all and open casinos instead-makes a lot more sense and money...

I doubt that racial purity has existed in any big way since some group of Neanderthals and a group of Homo Sapiens had a confab beside a campfire in what is now Spain/France and traded spearheads, pelts and shells for fish hooks, hunting strategies and mates-it is still what people do if left to their own devices ...

This study seem to show that Europeans were here more than 10-12 thousand years ago and perhaps as long as 26 thousand years ago, while the DNA evidence shows no trace of Europeans them. This seems to fit the Saginaw manifold hypothesis as the reason for the megafauna extinction and the vanished European population, followed by re-population from Asia. It probably rained for more than 40 days and 40 nights in the western hemisphere, with North America being pocked with Carolina Bays. Just my SWAG.

I know this stuff is interesting. But does it really matter?

Humans have been roaming around for a long time. As long as there have been men in boats, there have been humans all over the earth.

I know people who have sailed across the ocean in what I would refer to as small craft.

It doesn’t really matter who was here first. We did a pretty good job killing them when we showed up. (And not intentionally, I might add. Who knew they had never had small pox?)

Thanks Renfield, SES1066, and GeronL. The evidence for continual colonization is found nearly everywhere in the Americas; there has been little genetic evidence because the number of precolumbian remains is very small, and studies of current DNA samples show what exists today, and little else.

Based on the homogeneity of the language groups, the colonization of northernmost North America from Siberia, and vice versa, apparently took place a very short time ago, or just wasn't of much interest to anyone. The 'Red Paint' culture appears to have been distributed all around the Arctic Ocean shoreline, but is believed to antedate the current "indigenous" peoples by thousands of years. They vanished, or vacated to warmer areas.

There is quite strong evidence that the peculiar, almost elemental, copper deposits of the Michigan Upper Peninsula were the primary source of copper for Bronze during the Bronze Age. Sunken boats have been found in the Mediterranean with these peculiar metals. Indians have stories of tall, light-skinned explorers/extractors who managed mining and distribution of this copper.

Of course, the time of the Bronze Age (3600-1200 BC) does not represent the earlier epoch which this article refers to. However, it is strong evidence of longstanding voyages between Europe and the New World.

There's no longer any reason to believe that the direction of travel was from west to east and no other way -- mainly because the idea that the peopling of the Americas happened once and took place because the seafloor was exposed has just about died. It stunk long before it died. :')

A fascinating letter I received from a Shoshone Indian who had been traveling in the Basque country of Spain tells of his recognition of Shoshone words over there, including his own name, whose Shoshone meaning proved to match the meaning attached to a similar word by the modern Basques. While it’s possible copper crossed the Atlantic, more is known about the use and (overland, riverine) trade of copper in precolumbian America. In the Mediterranean, the copper of Cyprus shipped as “oxhide” ingots (easier to handle and carry) was mined and traded for a long, long time, and those ingots show up on wrecks and in the ruins of ancient cities.

Hide hulls stretched over a wooden and/or whalebone frame. These ships, while sufficiently sturdy, were lightweight, and could be pulled up onto the shore (or ice floe), and overturned to provide a shelter. These boats persisted into neolithic times, and there are engravings of them in stone, across northern Scandinavia and Karelia.
