This is something that I have come to understand. While I am not opposed to improving crops in general, including by means of genetic manipulation, in this instance, the scientists appear to have come up with a cure that is worse than the disease.
I think that ending this line of work on nicotine based natural insecticides, along with tighter scrutiny of future research directions and more rigorous trials before approval is granted for commercial deployment, rather than the wholesale ending of genetic modification is in order.
We have to learn from our mistakes.
