Odd to you and your ilk anyway.

To those that know and trust in Yehova, its not odd, its the good life.

Those who have no church?

It occurs to me that Yehova made scientists, too. You can live with 2nd century medicine if you want to, but I’m damn glad I got polio and smallpox vaccines. Same with MMR and annual flu shots. I suppose you think tetanus vaccinations are bad, too.

What is ODD to me is the sheer number of vaccines babies are required to be given these days....I had a polio shot, and a TB test, and that’s all I can remember. (Don’t believe those under 1 year were given vaccines.) I believe that is probably the problem....heck, even vets are stepping back from the vaccine treadmill for dogs/cats...

And, happily, both the chickenpox and shingles vaccine are grown in vats of cells derived from an abortion older than I am.

I do agree that that is disturbing. A quick check on Google shows that even among Catholic experts, there is some disagreement about the proper course of action. However, it seems most of them agree that it is better to receive the vaccine. I would suggest writing to the manufacturer to express your concern. But keep in mind that it is not a trivial matter to change the growth conditions of the virus; changing to another cell line (maybe a monkey, dog, or guinea pig cell line) would necessitate a whole new round of clinical trials. That might take a decade.

I'm not as concerned about the vaccine being based on an attenuated virus. I already know I have live, fully active virus hiding in my nerves. I don't want it flaring up again--shingles *is* painful, and every time that post-herpetic neuralgia flares up, I have to remind myself not to scratch it. Even though I'm not old enough for the shingles vaccine (it is recommended after age 60), I will still ask for it on my next check-up because I really don't want to get shingles again.

The reason that pieces of DNA from the cell lines would be present in the vaccine virus is that the virus forces the cell to make new viruses. All of those new viruses are made of material from the infected cell. This is true of all viruses; if you catch a virus from a total stranger who sneezes near you at a grocery store, you get bits of their DNA and proteins because those are what the viruses are made of. Plus, you would get a whole bunch of other proteins--anything contained in their bodily fluids, in fact.

Do the math and see if you can tell me which big government/medical will pick.

They'll pick the cheaper and easier solution every time--it's far cheaper to vaccinate than it is to try to provide medical care for every sick person during an epidemic. In an epidemic situation, there might not be enough medical resources--personnel, beds, supplies--to take care of everyone.

“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ “

Indeed. As often as I can. To an ordained priest.

I don’t get this - I wasn’t vaccinated against measles and mumps as a child - no one was - I had them, recovered, the way everyone else did. Since when are they fatal?

I must be the only other person from my generation who still has my tonsils. My mother said that tonsil removal was a stupid fad, and she wouldn’t let me have them removed. She was right.

Indeed. I was born to be a scientist. If God didn't want me to be a scientist, He wouldn't have given me such an overwhelming fascination with the natural biological world.

I'm also glad for all those vaccines. Of all the vaccine preventable diseases, I've only had chickenpox (the vaccine wasn't invented yet when I was little) and mumps (ditto).

Until a few years ago, infectious disease was responsible for more than half of all deaths worldwide. Thanks mostly to vaccination programs, they no longer are. People don't get old enough to get cancer if they die from an infection first...

I’m not Catholic.

Therefore, opinions of various Catholic experts are irrelevant to whether or not using dead babies in vaccines constitutes a grave sin.

Not all pro lifers are Catholic.

The virus was previously either contracted in elementary school or daycare the old fashioned way.

Or, now, just injected directly sometime around the child’s first birthday. And, again sometime around 15m or 18m.

Either way infecting the child, for life, with chickenpox virus.

Now we have 4yr olds who, having been infected with the live chickenpox virus during routine immunizations at 1yr and 15m, have shingles. Only all those meds given to little old ladies with shingles are VERY VERY off label for pediatric use. So the little 4yr old suffers.

But hey, at least they didn’t actually get the chickenpox when they were 8 or 9 like kids in my age group.

This is one virus we should be looking to eradicate.

Not deliberately manage to simultaneously infect every live human on the planet. In the guise of immunization. I’m leery of a ‘cure’ for a lifetime persistent virus that involves infecting everyone as step 1.

The VA gave me what I think was called a Tdap immunization shot recently, I didn’t know what it was, but it was free, so I took it since I heard the word tetanus, I have never turned down a tetanus shot.

I don’t know about all the modern immunization shots available today, but I was all for my son getting all the normal ones when he was a kid.

My little brother’s life was not helped by his getting polio, luckily his case wasn’t too bad.

They have always been fatal or caused permanent damage to a small proportion of those who develop the disease. Measles, for example, kills about 3 out of every 1000 victims; another 22 out of every 100,000 victims can die years later from an encephalitis caused by measles. Although you might not personally know anyone who died or has permanent brain damage from measles, mumps, or another disease, those numbers are high enough to be a serious public health concern.
