Bump for later.
Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.
Let Freedom Ring,
You better invest in a whole bunch of high capacity mags too, since they’ll be at the top of the agenda for the gun grabbers.
Actually, you need to blame Hitler. He chose the name 'storm (assault) rifle' for the Maschinenpistole 43.
The Sturmgewehr 44 is considered the 'grand daddy' of assault rifles. A select fire, intermediate cartridge rifle.
You can split hairs that civilian versions of the AR-15 don't have select fire, but you can still dump 30 rounds in less than 30 seconds in a six inch group at 100yds with very little practice. Good luck pulling that off with a bolt action.
Way ahead of you. My primary sidearm is an HK P30. Standard magazine holds 15 rounds.

Is the Colt significantly better than a Panther or Stag Arms? Even the WalMart price for the Colt is $300 or so than I’ve seen for the Panther ... and that’s without the picatinny rails that come with the Panther.

Honestly, I think a high-cap magazine ban has a better chance of passing than an assault weapon ban. This might be the compromise the House is forced into.
Get a 7.62. Nothing wrong with the 7.62x39 good for up to 400 yards.
Longer yet get a .308, M1A is what I have built up around, sure its heavier, holds less ammo but its better suited against trained heavily armed insurgents.
My understanding was that the 7.62 is a bit unweildy for a carbine or light machine-gun frame. Kicks too hard. Difficult to quickly re-sight for a double-tap.

It has been my experience that the 5.56 lacks what it takes when you need all you can get, nuff said.
Remember it was designed to be a wounding cartridge, unfortunately our enemies have devolved to where they do not give a dam about their wounded, their wounded would probably be shot by their own. So its usefulness as a strategic weapon that was supposed to tie up their hospitals with wounded does not come into play any more.
For close quarter work I’ll use a 5.7x28
IMO Stag Arms model 3 is probably the best bang for the buck when it comes to the AR platform. I believe the uppers are made by the same company that makes Rock River uppers and the lowers are of the same quality, though the triggers are not as good as the RR two stage. As for Mil-spec, in the civilian market the difference is the butt stock is made of thicker metal and can take more abuse thus the threading on the lower is a little different. Otherwise the parts are interchangeable.
I see a bunch of people knocking the AR platform and yes, if you can afford an M1A or Ruger Mini 14 I say go for it but if you are in the sub $1000 range it is hard to beat an AR. Plus there are millions of them out there so parts and accessories are plentiful.
I have heard it can be necessary to double-tap with a 5.56 ... though it can also be necessary with a 7.62, and you have fewer rounds. I thought Special Forces operators used primarily 5.56. For instance, the weapon that supposedly got OBL was an HK416, which I thought was a 5.56 weapon. Maybe I’m mistaken.
For me, it is primarily a target shooting and CQC self-defense weapon. I don’t imaging I’m going to be doing much long-distance self-defense shooting.

One thing I discovered is that DPMS .308 magazines are not compatible with Armalite magazines. They were also scarce and expensive when I was looking 3 years ago. Before you choose a rifle, see if the mags you want are readily available.
Before you buy go take a look at the Windham AR 15 HBC (heavy barrel carbine). Get the one with the handle because you can use the iron sights or mount a red dot on the top of the handle. We just traded in our Bushmaster heavy barrel for one and its far superior.
I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but what would be a good rifle for a small woman, in terms of carrying weight and especially, recoil?
Any AR style rifle is light with minimum recoil. Supplies are plentiful with all the add ons and mags are cheap. Plus you can get different uppers so besides the standard .223 round you could get .22 platform for cheaper shooting.
As for specifically what AR I’ll leave that to the experts as I run the AK system though my understanding of ARs there are varying tiers of quality — lower priced Bushmaster to higher priced better quality Bushmaster, etc. I’ve read to lube AR’s with motor oil and terminal damage more effective with 75 grain bullets. I figure there will be plenty of AR’s laying around or obtainable from domestic enemy combatants.
Also other options are the SIG 516 (or 556 in 7.62x39), FN FS2000, FN SCAR as supposed to be phenomenal.
Great-Thank you!
“I dont mean to hijack this thread, but what would be a good rifle for a small woman, in terms of carrying weight and especially, recoil?”
Brace yourself for a flood of opinions. It would depend on what you intend to use the rifle for. Indoor defense? Outdoor street battles/sniping? Hunting? Target practice? For instance, for short-range work, I have a lightweight carbine that is nimble to swing and aim and shoots .45 ACP pistol bullets with minimal kick, but plenty of knock down power. Some people make a big deal about .45 ACP recoil in a pistol, but in a rifle the recoil is mild. It punches big holes at any velocity. It uses standard and extended Colt .45 magazines. Some people would suggest shotguns for indoor defense, but most of those have greater recoil than my carbine and don’t hold as many rounds. And, as a friend of mine found out, it takes a long time to dig all the shotgun pellets from kitchen cabinets!
