I’m with you...
I go to Home Depot every now and then and know to ask for a discount as I was told they offered it. I spoke with a military wife who works there and she regaled me with all the other places who offered discounts that I had no idea about...her response to my surprise was “it never hurts to ask, all they would do is say ‘no’ “....
I guess some folks live their lives like that every day but I have always thought if it’s a fair, affordable price and I need it, I pay full fare....
But that’s just me.....

My questions are these....should a business offer a discount?

Yes, if the business wants to maintain a base of military customers. In my area, Lowes always offers a military discount, even for retirees while Home Depot doesn't, hence, I take all my business to Lowes.

Should a Soldier ask for one?

Yes, you never know if a business is willing to save a soldier a little money.

Should a Soldier expect one?

No. That is just being bratty.

We were at the OMNI lounge in Chicago over the weekend when a young sailor in uniform was seated with his wife (or girlfriend) a few tables down. We asked our waitress to give us his bill and not tell him who did it. We can all give the young folks in uniform a “discount” without having to be a business owner. And yes I am retired USAF and enjoy the 10% discount at Lowes and Homo depot frequently.

Strongbow, I appreciate your service to America, and I applaud your actions. I am sure that sailor will never forget your kindness, even if he never knows who is benefactor was.

“Some people are really clueless about what it means to serve. 1% of our nation is willing to die for the freedom and ideals of the 99% that don’t serve - they should be paid more while athletes and movie stars should be hoping for a little discount at the store because they need the help making ends meet...”

Somewhere, somehow there has to be some admiration for the efforts of the taxpayer who pays for it all, and without whom, none of the freedoms would be possible.

The all volunteer armed-forces under civilian control is a lynchpin of democracy. But even the US armed forces is not beyond being perverted by a sufficiently diabolical civilian leader. We have that leader now.

The military must not become a threat to democracy. Placing them in an elite category above the taxpayers that pay for them is one way to start disconnecting them from the citizenry whose rights they protect and defend.

Military service connected with military industrial complex post military employment is lucrative, and every bit the threat that Eisenhower claimed it could be - only it’s worse now.

I still believe that most in the military serve for selfless reasons. But I am concerned for our country, and as with most institutions that are part of the grand experiment, and I no longer believe that there is an overwhelming majority serving for selfless reasons as there once was.

I`ve heard that too..

Langley AFB, here in Hampton, VA, is reputed to have 21 different gang cells on base and in off-site base housing.
