Nice thing about having a place that no-one wants is that property taxes are cheap.
I don't pull in government funds, but I can get by really well with $500USD/month. I've done it with much less, and it sucked.

Midland/Odessa makes watching paint dry seem exciting. Everything west of there has a certain money smell to it. Lord love a refinery.

All kidding aside, I have been thinking of a faraway place to retire for years.. I’ve had the benefit of extensive travel in the Caribbean and Central America, and even the Mediterranean Europe..
I even have owned land in Belize, as far back as when it was British Honduras, but after spending time there, I always found the best of what they offered is still a weak substitute for the good ole USA..
I was only half kidding about the bug problem in the tropics, it’s a big problem.. Good Luck

I’ve been in Oil and Gas since 1980. Been to Midland/Odessa a few times. You’re right about it being slower than watching paint dry.
I could see us owning property in some other country where we spend a few months a year. Preferably some place with a nice golf course or two.
Property Taxes in Houston is around 3% of value. Amazing just for the property taxes you can live for a year somewhere in Texas.
Colombia is still hanging in there, but yes. The promise of mirrors and shiny things have enveloped them. Sad really. Some protestant churches have been fighting this, but it is hard.
