Semi-auto (what you probably meant) not as reliable as bolt action, but many decent ones if you shop around. Many pawn shops have a decent gun section. Might find a deal at a gun show. Expect to pay upwards of $350 for something that’s just decent (unless it’s a .22 LR) and ammo is getting expensive for most weapons that actually pack a punch. I would suggest a .22 rifle with scope (or two as they are really versatile), a 12 or 16 gauge shotgun with alternating buckshot/slug configuration for the home, and a few decent handguns. Fill an ammo box and have enough ammo to “overflow into a couple drawers/spare mags, etc.
For home defense if your on the cheap like a lot of people now check out the Hi Point carbines in 9,40, 0r 45 cal. I said I would never own one because the pistols are heavy and ugly but they are some of the most dependable guns I have ever fired. The carbines are fantastic! I have tried to make mine jam loaded the clips Hollow point- round nose- flat nosed stagger in the clips and never a jam in 1000s of rounds!
Out to 75 yards deadly accurate any more the heavy short bullets start to be off but would still get the job done if you made a hit.
Maybe you should try putting some glass on it.
Either a mid-power scope or a red dot perhaps.
I recommend the “Davy Crockett” system & a shovel .
The shovel will come in handy since the blast radius is roughly equal to the maximum range of the launcher.
