In Connecticut, you’ll get off for time served.

Gurkhas are appreciated in the UK:

You satisfied the legend:

Legend has it that once a Gurkha unsheathes his kukri, he must draw blood with it. When a Gurkha unsheathes his weapon in a noncombative situation, he must then nick himself to satisfy the “blood thirst” of the blade.

People I want in my end of the ditch: Ghurkas, Sikhs, and Samoans.

Good choices but I would also like to add ROK Tigers, Seals, and the SAS.

The Ghurkas, Sikhs, Samoans, ROK Tigers, Seals and SAS will win or all go down together. They can be very bad in battle.

I believe a settlement was arranged.

Kukris are wicked edged weapons. I've got a couple. I've accidentally cut myself with one while sharpening it. (yes, that's one way, the hard way, to know it's sharp enough) Great camping tools - useful for everything from trimming steaks to making kindling. If I had to go into the zombie apocalypse without firearms (even with) I'd want a Kukri with me too.

I got my first khukuri as an 18-year-old in Germany, serving in the 5-KM border zone where the Brit and US border posts met. One night they sent a patrol of 8 guys out, one with a silenced Sterling SMG, one with a 7,62 Bren and the rest with shotguns, and all with Kukris. Their Brit NCOIC, who I later found out was an intel 1LT, did a little trading with me, and my kukri was part of the deal. In '79 the handle split, and it was replaced with one of African mopane wood, which has held up to today. I've since picked up several surplus and knife shop offerings as equipment for truck and other toolboxes, but my 1967 knife is the one I have with me when I expect it might count. Last time out, it was when an attempted mugger in Indy pulled a circa 4-inch folder on me. I was torn between resorting to the Crocodile Dundee/Paul Hogan line of * That ain't a knife, mate, THIS is a knife* or Ayo Ghorkhali! You are invited to guess which I came out with.

I still have the little folder he dropped as he ran off, too.

And then there was the Man From Fiji, Sergeant Talaiasi Labalaba, at Mirbat. You'll find his name inscribed on the SAS clock tower memorial at Hereford.

A unit tradition, not a requirement based on honour or jain dharmist religious belief.

However, the cry Jai Maha Kali! Ayo Gorkhali! may still be heard at times- even from Ghurkhas who are good Protestant lads. [Hail, Goddess Kali, The Gorkhas are here!]

I read about that incident. I think it's in one of my dead-tree books on a shelf in my library, from the required reading days of squadron life. He should get the VC.

I like islanders, generally. I almost married one, but I was afraid she would eventually kill me.
