That's not the aim. The plan isn't to make liberals love us, it's to increase the credibility gap to the point that the liberals sound half-psychotic when talking about us.
The best hope for conservatism is actually widespread skepticism. I know this is odd in a sense, as conservatism revolves around the protection and keeping of traditions, but that's the way it is when you've been wrapped in cobwebs of lies. It's in your self-interest for people to not believe what they're told that readily.
"Hypocrisy" is too strong a word: it implies a moral failing, which isn't the reason for the inconsistency you point out.
Try looking at it this way: the inconsistency you flag is the result of a tug-of-war between prudence and resentment at having to self-censor. Between avoiding more mud being slung our way and "busting loose." You'll have a more accurate, as well as charitable, interpretation of that see-sawing.
