I think what happened was that after the republicans helped President Kennedy with the civil rights issue and it became law the democrats knew that people would give the democrats the credit because the president was a democrat so they jumped on to the band wagon.
George Wallace was not a racist in the same sense that most democrats were, but he did believe in segregation because the blacks for the most part had not much in common with the whites of that day.
George Wallace like republican Barry Goldwater also did not think the federal government should have the power to force people to live together who did not want to live together.
Wallace was Governor of Alabama four times, he did not get there with out the black vote.
It was common knowledge in those days that democrats were racist as hell.
Actually, my modern history is pretty good. I couldn’t think of any Republicans who switched to Dem in the 60’s or 70’s. The only recent examples are Jeffords and Chafee, who switched to Independent and caucused with the Dems.
My point is that far more Dems switched to GOP than vice versa, which is why there are no conservative or moderate Dems anymore (the most conservative Dem senator has a worse ACU rating than the most liberal GOP senator).
This is not to argue that the GOP has not moved left; just that the Dems have moved left further and faster.
Thoughts?
can’t disagree with the truth....
