There is an Submarine Force Museum in Groton and you can go aboard the Nautilus. Well worth the trip.

I was an Electronics Technician on USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN-657) from 1984 to 1988.
Our boat carried 16 Trident C4 SLBMs with 8 W76 warheads each.
We carried more firepower than has ever been released in the history of war.

Thanks for the memories. I spent a couple of years at Groton Electric Boat doing precom for the USS Boston (SSN-703), now razorblades. The sail is in Buffalo, NY.
It was so neat watching the rings being welded together while the turbines and reactor and such were added. Awesome to see. The shipyard workers cared and there were a lot of them and they were so dedicated.
I can only imagine what it was like when the Nautilus was built. The program was just getting started. I saw Rickover getting on the Dallas on his last sea trials. Awesome memories.

do you know the history of the Nautilus? It started out as a diesel boat but was converted to nuclear by Rickover.

I was a navy nuke, and to be honest, hated it. Although they say it builds character.
