His father in Indonesia was a Muslim and dog is considered unclean and eating dog would be forbidden and the eater would be unclean. The story says it was his father who introduced him to it.

BTW he also ate snake which is not an acceptable food for Muslims and considered unlawful to eat. It’s connected to viciousness and devils. It’s also forbidden to eat carnivorous animals like lions and tigers. The reason is that the nature of the animal is violence and by eating you acquire part of that trait as I understand They are only supposed to eat herbivorous animals. I guess his Indonesian father and his cooks weren’t very good Muslims or the story in the book has some problems.
