Every Pap I’ve met has been a big dog in a little body. That appeals to me!
I’m picturing a GSD raising a kitten! LOL We had a little white kitten when we had our GSD and they played together incessantly. It was the cutest thing! I wonder if I have any old photos of them together. Scrappy and Dixie, what a pair!
My goal was, more than anything else, pointing out that the surgery is more than a simple, relatively painless procedure. When performed on a small kitten, it is most likely for the convenience of the owner, because a kitten can be trained not to be destructive.
To compare spay or neuter to cutting off toe bones is not correct.

Yup, immediately Shana took that kitten for herself. She was not spayed, never had offspring/bred, and was 7 years old. Shana had an iffy, goofy relationship with our mostly outdoor (gasp!!!) male cat. But she wanted that kitty. She’d pick her up and let her “nurse” on her nipples, and lick her up and down like nothing, including the “eating her XXXX” yuckies part. Unfortunately, I myself had to give Scarlett a bottle of formula, but lying along Shana’s body and suckling gave her security and contentment.
I understand what you were doing, however, a spay/neuter surgery is actually something more in a very real way. It changes what the dog would be, hormonally. Imagine for a moment if we routinely desexed humans at an early age. Do you not imagine that would have an impact on them?
We spay and neuter for various reasons, but the main non political one is that many people feel it makes the pet easier to live with, so the trade off is worth it. Same with declawing a cat. I was quite appalled that anyone would suggest that it would be better for a kitten to be put to sleep than to be declawed. I’ve seen the surgery, and it wasn’t really all that gruesome. Perhaps the vet I worked for was above average.
That is definitely true! Although one of our dogs is funny. His sisters and brother will run to the fence and go toe-to-toe with the German Shepard next door barking and carrying-on. He does it a little differently. He'll run out there with them but then stop about 30ft behind them and bark from there. :)
Chicken dog all grown-up and his sister the Alpha dog
OMG. That is almost the exact situation with my neighbors.
Their Papillons are neurotic obsessives (elder with a compensatory wimpy streak). My view of them is a bit smeared by this. They run with my German Shepherd at the fence but will not ever stop barking at our house (10 ft away, another of those poor development plans) - even when everyone is on the 2nd-floor opposite corner of the house and the dog is at grandma’s. Neighbors were ninnies about it and let the dogs yap. I got angry because I’m trying to nap my baby, and myself in that close room when baby would sleep. Our parties on the deck/porch were ruined alot because of their ceaseless barking.
It’s improved, but too late for the naps and our relationship. Apparently their new DIL complained about it (she has a well-adjusted little white dog) and they got a little more serious about curbing them. Also stopped just letting the dogs sit and bark at us for 1/2 to whole hour.
Ironically, now they’re a little too sensitive - I don’t mind dogs barking at each other - I can control that and understand it (my GS will obey me and come in, plus she’s not much of a barker). It was the “barking at no one” I hated most.
Sorry, it’s just a rant!
LOL! Ours just do it to say 'hi'! They bark for 2 or 3 minutes then they all just go about their business. My neighbor and I leave our back doors open all day so the dogs go in and out as they please. I think mine and his only go out when they hear the other out there. We both think it's funny. Almost like punching a time clock :)
btw, I am sorry it took them so long to recognize a problem. I had the same with the folks behind me for several years. Drove me nuts. Some people just don’t seem to be bothered enough by anything let alone take the simple steps to put their dogs in line. .
To be honest, I should’ve been bold and forthright and asked them if they could stop the barking, because of our baby. They are nice people, and I hate to have ruined it. By nice, you can also interpret, “wimpy” push-overs for dogs. (She would honestly call out “boys, boys, now now...”)
But that’s what I mean. The elder dog is psycho; I mean truly neurotic. Unfortunately he taught the young puppy to be more like him, rather than the pup taking the upper hand. These dogs WON’T let up when they realize all is kosher. They don’t stop (mostly the method now is to take them inside - which I would’ve appreciated when I was trying to get my baby to sleep in the swing).
If I had a dog like that at least I’d take him in after 5-10 min. No normal dog barks more than that if everything is normal outside. Believe me, neither of my GS barked like that. My old dog would bark at neighbors every time, but give it up after a short time when it was clear all was normal. If it wasn’t - she had to listen or she’d be ushered inside.
With GS, I never wanted anyone complaining about my dogs!
Smart little dog, in my opinion! You know, I see a lot of them in obedience (well, I did back in the day when I was competing) and also agility. They really are very smart. But you know that. :) I love their faces. Now I’ve almost talked myself into it, except we can only have 2 dogs here and I am probably getting my sons golden back so I will be full up.
;-)
I did, but it made my screen go blurry.
There must be some virus or Trojan that infects dog/child/feel good threads on Free Republic.
LOL! Pauli looks like a very happy dog!
Oh gosh, I saw this article via hot air. I’ve got comments up there actually.
It was kind of weird, when I was commenting the comments were coming in fast and furious, even though the article was a few days old. I wondered if all the people commenting had come there from hot air! Even though they didn’t all seem to be conservative.
Some people really do go too far with this stuff, the border collie on a leash and the hamsters (or gerbils? I forget) only for adults, or not for kids, whatever, toooo much!
