Hes no John Glen (sic)
I'm sure Chuck would appreciate the compliment. He never suckled up to the Kennedy clan nor betrayed his country by covering for the Clinton's misdeeds as a US Senator. Brave man, no doubt, but he threw away any respect he gained as an astronaut during his long and sordid political career.

“He had extraordinary eyesight-off the charts.”
Haven’t seen him out at the sportsmens club too much
lately but he used to come out to sight-in his rifles,
especially around deer and elk seasons. He hunted in
several different states, most likely anywhere he
wanted to. Once he showed me some ammo that he had
loaded himself. He identified the various loads with
an electric etching pencil on the cartridge bottoms.
I’ve got good eyesight but couldn’t read his inscrip-
tions. He had no problem and he was in his 70s at the
time.
Sometimes he and Victoria bring homemade cookies or
fruit by the clubhouse bar to share with the rest of
us members and, boy, does he love to attend our March
corned beef dinner meeting every year. For a man that
has spent so much time up in the air he is well grounded.

I was lucky that my grandfather had business dealings with James McDivitt. Those were the days of the real rocket jockeys. McDivitt flew 2 of the Gemini Missions and I believe he led mission control on at least one of the Apollo missions.

Great book. Read it many years ago as a hand me down from my Dad.
Love the stories of his test pilot days.
