I’m not sure if it is the same guy as the Rolling Stone’s bassist. I couldn’t find out any info on the author.

That was a good read. I’m inspired to see if I can find some of their earlier albums on vinyl.

R.E.M.’s Revolution (Band from Georgia Bids Adieu)

What other pop/rock bands from Georgia besides REM and the B52s have sold millions of album?

the Black Crowes. And the music is a whole lot better.

With Duane and Berry, no other band comes close.

Early REM sounded just like The Byrds.

"whiny sound"

Best description I've heard of a band that would have been mediocre at best in the sixties. The next good melody they find will be their first one. But since they're retiring, it looks they never will find one. Had to endure them for a period of time at work as they were put on the speakers. Goodbye, and good riddance.

I would rather listen to Tom Petty before REM. I knew about the B52s before they were known in the US. Some of the songs were cute but they were massively gay and liberal.

The last R.E.M. song to crack the Top 10 is “Shiny Happy People,” which the band parodied on Sesame Street as “Furry Happy Monsters.” The alternate lyrics, written by Sesame Street’s Christopher Cerf, described monsters who were happy, then sad, then happy again. The original song featured a prominent vocal by Kate Pierson of the B-52’s, who was made into a Muppet for the monster video. The monster version’s female vocal was actually cut by Stephanie D’Abruzzo of Avenue Q fame.
