Where does it say that $27 million is being spent on an elevator? The $27 million is for the entire project. The statue requires maintenance because it is in a constant state of corrosion. I’m not sure why you are attacking people in wheelchairs.
You mean wounded veterans still can’t make it to the crown? This is unacceptable.
and more accessible.
That is code word for wheel chair access. God bless people in wheel chairs. I’m sorry there are some places they can’t get to.
That too...this is just one more thing to spend money we do not have on....
I’ve seen enough of your posts to tell who the idiot is in this conversation. Any properly planned structure should allow for any cripple, of any sort, to enjoy the same access. Except, for yourself. You are that rare worthless person.
The Statue of Liberty was closed after 9/11, mostly for security/safety upgrades. The major restoration (including to the torch) was done for its 1986 centennial.

Actually no. I briefly scanned a year old article that I posted in 38 and discovered they are worried about evacuating people in a fire etc. Try reading it.
When a smoke alarm tripped inside the statue last month, hundreds of tourists were rushed down the equivalent of about 15 flights of stairs the same ones that firefighters would need to trudge up if the 125-year-old landmark catches fire.
The statue is scheduled to close in October 2011, after its 125th anniversary, to create a secondary stairwell down from the pedestal.
You are that rare worthless person.
I forgive you for that.
Yes. That’s what the article that I posted said.
Didn’t they just finish a project like this within the last 10 years?
The Statue of Liberty already has wheelchair access. The renovation improves access for everyone and includes additional staircases. It also covers many other things, if you had bothered to read the article. I’m not sure what your problem is, but you need to learn to read. If you want to complain about the cost, then feel free, but why you immediately singled out people in wheelchairs is a mystery.
Last renovation was during the Reagan administration. You are thinking of the 9-11 shutdown for security reasons.
I’ve seen a lot of your posts. You flatter yourself with your moniker. Unless you consider yourself one of the losers of the French Revolution. Get educated.
In that case, think of it as planning ahead for the renovation that would have come anyway in 10 years at 5 times the cost.
Thanks for the forgiveness. That tells me a lot about you. My apoligies.
Why do you think, in the modern era, we can’t accomodate those who, for whatever reason, can’t get to a acceptable area. It makes no sense. Considering what we pay for absolute crap we can afford it.
Well, I don't know, but I've been up those stairs. Looked out of a window in the crown, I think, but I was just a kid, and that was a long, long time ago.
