That is so funny! At our grocery store, there are these gigantic, dried bones (I am assuming from a cow) that must be 24 inches in length. I guess one of those would give the impression that a toy Poodle doesn’t live at that house! LOL!

I don't know about all neighbors, but one neighbor that one especially trusts. Don't cancel the newspaper. If the neighbor receives a newspaper, they should suspend theirs and borrow the vactioning neighbor's paper. They should take the mail in every day too.

Had an incident to an associate some time ago where he was robbed during weekday work hours. He had a nice 4-wheelin' truck parked in the garage. Theives bust into his house and loaded up the truck in the garage with pretty much everything of major value. Then hitched up the trailer with the jet-ski's and pulled out into the driveway. Within a minute another pickup truck backed into the driveay, into the garage, and hitched up the trailer with the ATV. Then both trucks drove off.

The neighbors didn't think anything of it; the first truck pulling out was the neighbors pickup (familiar), and the other truck was assumbed to be a friends (assuming they were heading up north - a common enough occurance).

A house-sitter turns out to be cheaper in the long run than putting animals in a kennel and trying to deal with your alarm company from 3000 miles away. A lot of times there are no neighbors at home during the workday to notice whether someone has a truck parked in your driveway. My neighbors would have no idea whether I was moving or not; they aren’t nosy.

I hire some nice girls my daughter grew up with; they won’t have crazy parties and their parents are involved. All the alarms and light-timers in the world don’t create the same impression as someone who is actually using your TV, dragging trash and recycling bins in and out, watering the flowers and leaving a hose out for a day then bringing it in the next day, playing music, opening and closing windows, walking the dogs, etc. You can’t fake real life. And they are under strict orders not to post any information about where they’re staying on their Facebook wall!

I haven’t had a land line in 7 years. This sort of eliminates the “nobody answered at home” problem.

My brother, who used to work for the Post Office, told me that new mail slots are not permitted, old ones are grandfathered in. The ostensible reason to prevent injuries to letter carriers, the actual reason is because the post office could not compete with bulk carriers.

A trusted teenager from church (or if girls, two of them)

We were out of the house for three months, and we had the choir director's daughter stay at our house. The only problem was that she was such a better housekeeper than my wife that my wife's jealousy was palpable.

Quick thinking on your part, but must you keep us (me) in suspense?

How long WAS it before your neighbors regained their (evidentiary) possessions?

Our neighbors used to go away a lot.

We would pick up all newspapers, door hangers, litter, packages and mail for them. Also left a car in their driveway so it looked like someone’s always home. They had a pet to medicate too, so at medication time in the morning, we opened the curtains and in the evening we closed them on the same schedule they would use. Also watered whatever the drip/sprinklers couldn’t reach.

They’re old and don’t get around too good, so sometimes the housecleaning or fix it fairies would come to call too.

Make sure you have a good neighbor before you tell them of your vacation plans!

Sometimes it’s the neighbor who does the stealing/enabling!

Those are rally low life bath-turds that don’t deserve to breath air.

I'm surprised you could understand what I said:) I meant really and breathe. Even if I would have spell checked I wouldn't have caught it. My computer is very slow and maybe that has something to do with not putting in all the letters but then again, I COULD read it before sending. I am sure this is more of an explanation than you needed:)

A good, VERY high tech security system is no longer a luxury, it's a must--regardless the general safeness of neighborhood anymore--especially if you DON'T have a good safe for all papers and firearms. Sad but true.

Receiving the instantanious "should we sent police" (or firemen) phone call from the monitoring company, if your house has been breached (or is burning) while you're out of town, is worth the cost in spades--cottage or mansion.

Safe and security system: the new basics.

Call their office (there should be at least a number to phone in ads) and tell them to send someone out to clean up their litter or you will call the police and swear out a complaint for littering and that you will do it if it happens again.

Frankly, my memory isn't what it used to be, if it ever was. I remember her commenting when she got the clothing back that everything had already been replaced but at least it was in season, so that should have been one or two years later (maybe three?). Frankly, I'm not sure.

I agree wholeheartedly. ADT has been doing a good job with mine for the last ten years.
