There was an actual melody that if you wanted to you could hum, whistle or even play on the piano.
The first thing that I remember that actually bore some similarity to rap is by Eric Burdon in 1967 or 68 on the "Winds of Change" album called "The Year of the Guru". It's posted on Youtube but it is a horrible recording off a five and dime turntable, so I'm not posting the link.
Someone mentioned Isaac Hayes and an album he released in 1969 had a lot of spoken words but the tempo was more along the lines of soul-full speaking than rap. (this album also included my favorite interpretation of "Walk On By")
Spoken word recordings were long a niche market, even on seventy-eights. The last commercially sucessfull one I recall is "Desiderata" by, I think Les Crane in around 71 and you would hardly mistake this for rap. Spoken word doesn't always mean rap. I really wish it would go away.
