You all remember the rear facing rear seat in the late 60's and early 70's station wagons? My wife's 1994 Mercedes wagon has a rear facing back seat.

Thank the EPA.
I recall an article with the reason that SUVs supplanted the station wagon: for CAFE fuel economy standards, station wagons were counted as cars, and messed with manufacturers fuel economy averages. SUVs counted as trucks.

Vern Moeller built this custom Cadillac woody station wagon out of several different classic cars, including a 1947 Cadillac hearse.

Thank the EPA.You're absolutely right, they created the SUV loophole, and it resonated with people who think "sport" means leather seats and electric cup holders.
My suggestion: "TANK the EPA"

It's really about price.
Subaru is going great guns on their wagons, for example -- at about 1/3 of the price of a Volvo.

While not technically a station wagon, these old Ford panels were great for doing all kinds of nefarious things in the back, even at school or in the mall parking lot.

Two of my favorite cars were Ford Escort Wagons.
Enough car, good mileage, tons of room. Great machines.

My SUV [in the state it is registered in] is classified as a truck. I love it so much, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. From stand-still, it feels like a truck at over 4500#. Great in deep snow....and who woulda thunk you need a heated steering wheel [it came that way].
