Let me suggest a really good new book called "Dupes" by Paul Kengor, about the left in the 20th century and how they were constantly (and willingly) fooled by the commies.
Any book by Thomas Sowell. My favorite is Knowledge and Decisions. George Macdonald Fraser’s Quartered Safe Out Here is the best memoir I’ve ever read about WW II. Fraser wrote the Flashman novels. Quartered is about his experiences with Slim’s 14th Army in Burma. It is not to be missed. I also agree that Paul Johnson’s Modern Times is indispensible to an understanding of the 20th century and the state as the biggest killing machine in history. Oh, one other recommendation - Reflections on a Ravaged Century by Robert Conquest, simply magnificent.
