There’s another video on YouTube showing the system in action at a UNLV basketball game. You can see the customized UNLV Rebels magnet in each cup. Think of the licensing rights for logos. Right now there are 122 professional sports franchises in North America, and even though some universities like Ohio State don’t sell beer at their events, I’m sure the majority do.

This is going to go worldwide, fast. If it works for beer, it will work for other drinks as well. Any high volume fast food joint is going to want this system.

With a bit of tweaking, it might even produce a perfect head on a pint of Guinness — alas, without the clover.

Plastic cup, two magnets. One magnet is like a washer, the other a full circle. The washer magnet is attached to the cup, with the hole going through the cup. The circular magnet covers the washer, sealing the hole. As the beer starts up, the circular magnet rises because of the pressure. As the cup fills, the beer will cover the circular magnet until the pressure is great enough to push the circular magnet back down to re-engage the bottom washer magnet. Resealing the cup. I think. :-)

I doubt McDonalds is going to want to spend 40 cents a cup - Because of the expense of the magnets and the manufacturing, I doubt we'll see it on anything but high value drinks. Though I could totally see Disney cups..

I hate when someone drops their diaphram in my beer.

Good point, although I am sure that now that at least one variation of the system is in place, there will be others, and ways will be found to lower the price.

Lots of clubs will want these. Hell, you could set up beer vending machines alongside one wall at 500 yen a glass, and let the customers serve themselves. It seems pretty much idiot proof because all the fancy gear is below the counters.

There are kids bars (20s-30s) in Japan that already have vending machines, but they always run out halfway through the night and getting the carts in to open and restock them is a pain in the butt.

The glasses don’t even have to be disposable. You can make them out of a sturdier plastic and then use them at food courts in malls and other places.

I'm surprised that Annheuser-Busch InBev, SAB Miller or Molson Coors has not licensed this technology. Just the ability to serve beer WAY faster means a lot more revenue for the beer companies at sporting venues.

They can pour a record amount of 8 dollar beers to a bunch of drunks so they can get to “0 to a**hole” faster.
I aint no slouch when it comes to drinking beer, but this sounds like a not so good idea.
