I will never understand it. These people believe that earth is an insignificant speck in a vast meaningless coincidental universe, and they hold that this meaningless universe has personally authorized them to save every microbe from extinction.
Meanwhile, people who believe that every single species was designed by G-d during the Six Days of Creation specifically for a particular niche which no other species can fill often don't seem to care when one of these irreplaceable special creations is rumored to be endangered.
