Pork should be served for the evening meal on this day. We can even cook it over a burning koran. In all fairness, this would be the right message to send. We were attacked by these people and thousands died on that day. Denying them any victory what so ever should be the goal. We should do this in remembrance of who the enemy is that did this.
National service and submission to Allah is the exact opposite of what we should be doing on 9/11.

The Soviets used to require volunteers (yes - require volunteers) to “donate” their Saturdays to various work projects without compensation.
Real volunteerism can be great. Dictated “volunteerism” is, well . . . you said it.
