I am not getting an all-in-one again. My last Epson all-in-one had the printer part die, and now I’m stuck with a rather bulky scanner.
I guess it’s a matter of luck. I owned two Canon printers. I only bought the second one because I had some many extra ink carts from the first one.
When it broke, I tossed everything and bought the HP.
It’s been 100% trouble-free.
Ditto that. My first ever printer was a Canon. Never again.

Hewlett Packard - LaserJet 1020 review
Stay away from Epson ink jets. They’re notorious for getting clogged up and failing.
I currently have an HP Photosmart ... so far, so good. Going on 4 years.
I have bought and maintained hundreds of printers over the past 25 years - dot matrix, laser, inkjet. Most consumer printers today are cheap, but flimsy. For B&W printing, I still prefer HP Laserjets over any other. HP B&W laser printers use a single cartridge than combines toner, developer and optical drum, all in one unit. What could be simpler to change? Some competing brands have two or three separate components - messy. Laser printers have lower operating costs for high volume, but also don’t dry out like the inkjets due to infrequent use.
My current HP is probably about 5 years old, the only problem I’ve had is that it doesn’t like cheap, thin paper.
Apart from poor reliability, the biggest gripe I had with the Canon was that the ink cartridges dry out quickly regardless of whether you use it or not. I don’t know if they still use that cartridge design (they did when I bought my current HP). The HP doesn’t have that problem.
Also, the Canon refused to print a black and white document if any of the color cartridges were empty (that may no longer be true, however). That’s never been a problem with HP.
Canon makes GREAT cameras, though!
I heard they had a lot of problems with their cheaper cameras a while back (lens mechanism jamming). Don’t know if that’s still true, though. Their digital SLRs are exceptional, from what I’ve heard.
I used to swear by HP but the last ones I had were pure junk. I’d avoid the ink jets because they are so clunky and the replacement cartridges are where the money is made. They practically give the printers away and rip you off with the ink cartridges.
I bought an Okidata 5200n several years ago and it has given me great service although in all candor I don’t use it all that much. I also have two Samsung lasers and they work well; one mono and the other color a CLP 310.
The original HP printers were good. The later ones are junk in my opinion. I wouldn’t buy one today. And I wouldn’t buy an ink jet of any brand.
I've owned an HP printer...but it died. Bought a Lexmark..and it never let me down. Finally gave it away..as my daughter had purchased a Lexmark x1240 ( Printer/Scanner/Fax..) and didn't want it.
So she gave it to me...and I like it. And it's a smaller footprint...so it saves room
FRegards,
I have a second-hand HP, and can print up to two reams a month on it without it even coughing.
PS: That’s home use, and I have the ink preferences set on “Draft.”
I adored my 4L! Printed hundreds of thousands of pages flawlessly for fifteen years. I was so sad when it died that I felt like apologizing when I chucked it in the recycling center. Knew I’d never have a device that reliable again.
The last time I needed to replace the ink cartridges for my HP printer was the last straw. The total was $60 for black and all color cartridges.
I asked the sales guy what was the cheapest ink? He said Kodak. I walked out of the store with with an $80 print/scan/copy all-in-one Kodak printer that had ink included in the box.
Future refills are $10 for black $15 for color.
So far it is much faster and better quality printing than the HP I had.
Yeah, I dont know who’s going to last longer, the printer or the cat?
The old cat doenst look to good lately ....
LOL!
Thanks all! Digesting...
