Dave Mustaine from Megadeth is a Christian
"Nickelback" is the official radio product for people who want "hard rock" but don't want to be bothered with complicated features like musicianship and creativity. The product also comes in "Bon Jovi" flavor.
"Coldplay" is a similar offering in the "soft rock" category and it also comes in "Maroon 5" flavor.
There are plenty of other “Maidens” that got rejected by radio/tv/magazines that could have gone the distance if the industry hadn’t had the celebrities determined by “the suits”.
Good on Maiden to be able to thrive (through many years of touring and building a fan base).
But what makes it to radio is as reflective of rock and roll that is being recorded as Fabian, Tab Hunter, and Sal Mineo of the rock and roll being recorded in the late 1950s.
It’s worse on modern country stations. I have been able to mentally tune out but I know that ‘Why Don’t You Stay’ still plays seven to ten times a day after two years.
IMHO the radio industry has been taken over by a few programmer owners. Guess the jocks on ‘FM’ lost the argument. (wry joke, there, no seriousness)
Love that Christian Rock, Kerry Livgren, many more...
It was a fluke that “grunge” got through to the masses. But the late 1980s radio/tv bands were pretty awful too (Poison?). The beginnings of what called grunge were contemporary to that but the media was into hyping hairmetal and rap as the sounds of the youth culture (and house music).
I can’t say that I ever was a fan of what was pushed on my ears on radio. There might have been some things but never a total feeling that “this is MY music”.
I wasn't focused on "Christain Rock" performers as much as mainstream rockers who were or had become Christians. Kerry certainly fits that bill.
ZERO Hour, SALT LTD, I Believe, eclectic christian rock, underground bands..
songs not bands
Yes. Same guy - Nicko. I read a local golf newspaper and they had an article about him. Nice guy - smart and disciplined.
In reading about Nicko and Bruce Dickinson. My impression is the guys in Iron Madien are very smart businessmen.
Lots of folks in the industry who could not be direct and have Hollywood promote them, Yes for example..
King Crimson, 21st century Schizoid man..smokin..
I believe Kerry’s new band is called AD
Phantom of the Opera... is best sung by Paul Di’Anno
“...watch your step he’s out to get you,
don’t you stray, from the narrow way-ee-ay, yeah!”
Maiden rocks!!!!
Pearl Jam has had 4 albums released in this decade. World Wide Suicide and Life Wasted from their s/t album were both pretty successful singles. Their newest singles have done decently well too.
RHCP had two albums out this decade, both with several successful singles. While the heaviest rotation from PJ is probably still from 10, RHCP is definitely from their 3 most recent albums. In fact, at this point in their career I would say BloodSugarSexMagick is underrated and not as well known as it should be as their high water mark.
Not much can be said about still playing Nirvana, other than so much radio rock is still indebted to them even now.
2 Minutes till midnight!
Being that music is totally subjective, I would say that Remember Tommorrow is Di’Annos’ best..
The first album had the better songs, But Killers had the production value, and to this day 1 of the top 10 album covers of all time..
There is no modern rock that can be relied on to appeal to a wide audience like a lot of 90’s rock can. There is a lot of good rock music out there, but it isn’t necessarily going to appeal to that kind of wide audience. At least not without selling out to their worst impulses (see Kings of Leon). It is pretty gratifying to see a band like The Black Keys gain new fame based on an album that is a continuation of their best stuff and not their worst.
Rick Derringer is on that list
They are still playing the 20 year old Pearl Jam and Red Hot songs, that are contemporary of the defunct-since-1994 Nirvana cuts they play.
Maiden is still outselling the competition and still denied airplay.
That’s kind of the point.
And calling it “alternative rock” means nothing in a day when there is no “current release” rock on any other stations (everything else being oldies radio of 60s-70s and now 80s formats). Alternative to what? What people actually listen to?
