Are you good at fixing things? A good handyman?
Why not place an ad in the paper as a ‘honey do’ man?
There are lots of single women and elderly out there who will pay for a good handyman- fix things around the house, run errands etc.
How much did your brain fetch?
Well, not to hijack the thread, but based on the results of our primary yesterday - November is looking pretty bleak. The GOP here in Georgia backed, and won with way too many business as usual types : / Real conservatives were for all intents and purposes, ignored. By the powers that be, and then, by the voters who, once again, voted for the candidate with the prettiest fliers, and the best TV ad : |
Good thread, because we darn sure are going to need the information if this keeps up.
God bless,
Tatt
My parents were also children of the depression.. They were always blue collar workers and never made a whole heck of a lot of money, but somehow managed to raise 4 kids, buy a home with a nice bit of land (enough to give 5 acres each to each of us kids), and save $10,000 each for each of their 3 grandchildren. Where there’s a will there’s a way. I’ve got to keep an eye on my mom now though now that she’s up in age. She’ll do without necessities for no reason at all. I’m almost intrigued to find out what she has stowed away in her mattresses...
I work in a rather specialized health care field gathering and analyzing data. Not many people do what I do so there is some demand for my skill set. I consult for a short list of hospital clients. They give me access to their electronic records and I can do it from home evenings and weekends. It actually pays better than my day job, but demand can be up and down so I keep the day job for benefits and security and bank the extra income when I can get it for use throughout the year.
I didn’t sell it, luxury taxes and all.

In my part of town, there are a TON of garage sales every weekend. You would be astonished at some of the GREAT deals you can get. I have been furnishing my house with beautiful things that I have paid literally PENNIES on the dollar for. We also have a local thrift store that has clearance sales all the time, where you can buy very nice things for a buck or two. Anyway, now that I am done furnishing, I am probably going to go out and find great deals like those, and post them on Ebay for sale.
yeah, it causes indigestion when taking an after dinner jaunt to Hawaii on the private jet.
Become a human guinea pig.
Pay off your debt, don’t sign any long term contracts ie cell phone. There will always be work but you may have to move around the country. You want to be able to move where the jobs are
I’m an artist and I sell my paintings. I also go over to the local Goodwill and find good clothes to sell on Ebay. It’s amazing, but I find beautiful brand-new clothes with the tags still on them from Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, or Brooks Brothers. I also write things occasionally, am starting a blog, and answer occasional sales phone calls that get routed to me by a local firm when no one in their office picks up the phone.
Sell Soylent Green on the black market
Raised by 2 Depression era parents (Dad was born in ‘36), I was brought up frugal on a nearly self-sufficient farm. The only thing we didn’t have was a milk cow.
So, having parents that were tighter than 3 coats of paint, really makes us kids frugal.
We have all started our own farm businesses, following in the footsteps of our grandfather and father.
Knowing how to do everything from building a house, barns, etc, doing cement work, you name it, Dad did it to save us money we didn’t have for many years. There were times like with major electrical stuff, that he called in professionals, but we did everything on our own, saving untold thousands over 40 years.
We do sell things on Ebay, but that’s just for fun. Really not any profit there, just selling knicknacks I’m tired of.
I don’t do unnecessary driving. I combine reasons to drive. Never go for just one thing or to one place. Of course having a home business makes the commute on foot, and a hundred feet out the back door. So screw the arabs, I don’t need much gasoline and I have 2 horses if things go sideways and there is no gasoline.
Starve the beast, don’t spend unless you must.
Better days ahead, but not until 2013.
Nothing good is happening to the economy until Oblah-blah is out of office.
LOL beat me to it.
“I call this one, ‘The Snake.’”
A friend buys brand named jeans at yardsale and sell them for a large profit on eBay. She actually started it to add to her income and now makes so much it IS her entire income.
Most sales are out of country. Make sure you cover expenses and use pay pal.
I funded it by cancelling my cable TV subscription.
Two of the best decisions of my life.
I haven’t done it but I always thought it would be a good idea to set up electronics for the electronically challenged and show them how to use them.
There are so many things, new TVs, Tivos, Direct and Dish TV, computers, even cell phones.
Maybe give them cheat sheet so they can figure out how to use them.
I don’t know how many old ladies (I am an old lady but I can connect and figure out my own stuff) are bamboozled by new technology. And they have all the money sitting in the bank.
You could advertise in the paper and in Senior Citizens centers.
We are currently ‘doing’ Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace U. He suggests getting a second job, pt, delivering pizzas or ANYTHING as a way to get cash flow up. You know it will be a temporary fix, you assume it will not pay top dollar, but you do anything you can to get cash in.
Plus ‘rice and beans’ eating — which is, of course, cutting way back. You’d be surprised how quickly you can amass extra cash in a pinch.
FPU is a great course, by the way. We did it online.
Hubby is quite a good mechanic and welder. He offers his services to friends/family.
I have bartended weddings on the side. I actually have made very decent “extra” money doing that.
That money usually goes into the savings because we don’t typically allow ourselves to get to the point where we are desperate.
