Yes it was X-rated, back in 1974.
Nowadays that same movie would only receive an R rating at best.

“Flesh Gordon” was much more entertaining...

I still remember how Sam Jones introduced his character to Ming in the movie:

“Flash Gordon, quarterback, New York Jets”

Simple. Cool. And a brain-worm celebrating its 40th birthday. :)

Flash Gordon owes a debt to Edgar Rice Burroughs and his "John Carter of Mars" series.

Who needs the movie when Al Williamson drew the adapation (and also drew the Charlton and King comics in the 1960s)?

Dino De Laurentiis was accountable for the Barbarella, Diabolik, and Flash Gordon comic book movies.

There was a pathetic John Carter Warlord of Mars movie released straight to video this year. I suspect that it was a production made to maintain copyright licensing to the project.

Apparently they are making a full fledged Hollywood production of ‘John Carter of Mars’ based upon “A Princess of Mars” and starring the guy who played Gambit in the Wolverine movie and Riggins in Friday Night Lights.

The previous Princess of Mars starred Traci Lords.

It had the production values of a 1978 made-for-tv movie and a bare bones plot.

The cartoon series was from 1979 and it has been released on DVD.

The first thing that came to my mind was the soft core porn film “Flesh Gordon” from the 70’s. ;)
