Inject a lethal poison into the pellet load. That way it only takes one pellet breaking the skin.
Every individual, every family should rely on its own resources and not rely on the feds for anything.
That is how one exercises their freedom.
Liberty, true liberty, means not needing the federal government for anything except ones protection from exterior menaces re its foreign enemies.

Depends...
How close do you want to permit someone before you start defending yourself?
Standard residential: .40 S&W M&P. With 1 in the chamber, it will hold 16 rounds AND and a 12 ga. that will hold as many as possible. Practice with the .40.... a lot.
A Remington 700 (.243, .270 or .308) with a good scope never hurts if you want to start shooting before they get close.
Don’t forget food and household needs. I’ve heard if there were a national disaster grocery stores would be bare after 3 days. Learning to grow and preserve your own food is also a real plus or at least buying veggies and fruit when they are in season and canning them. An emergency generator large enough to run a freezer and refrigerator and some other necessary electrical equipment would also be to your advantage. Some generators now run on gas, propane and natural gas.

It seems to me that the NRA is trying to get in bed with liberals.
They should be wary.
You can never ever trust liberals. They will lie to your face and then when you turn your back, they will stab you until you are dead.
I also vote “pump shotgun” ,, however it is to be used to facilitate a fallback to your sailboat which will be equipped with plenty of food and water. The best “survive the zombie apocalypse” answer is to NOT BE THERE.
According to some you should surround yourself with gold. But I like your idea of getting a weapon better.
Oh no! It’s a giant spork weasel!
I know you hate gold probably because you can’t eat it, but some of us can buy guns, gold, food and fuel.
Long range center-fire rifle to pick em off comin up the road, maybe an AK or AR for when they hit the front yard (really big front yard), a good 12ga porch gun for closer work and a good .45acp for the really close ones. Maybe I need to work in a flame-thrower there somewhere.
