These Applephiles are so hypocritical!
First, they tout their "app store" as superior.
Then, they trash the competition for having to get an app for video conferencing.........even though, Apple's videoconferencing is so restricted (only other iPhones, only over Wifi, etc) that it pales in comparison to the app-driven alternatives.
I have a WiFi sniffer on both non-jail broken iPhone and iPad. I just discovered 19 other networks in my immediate area. But then I downloaded the app a while back. So I guess it’s grandfathered in.
It’s not illegal to see broadcasting networks, only to connect to them. You can do the same thing with your laptop.
Facetime is WiFi only, right now, but they plan to bring it to 3G, and Apple has opened up face time to use by any other vendors.
What’s so great about face time? From what I hear, it just works. Press a button and there you are, no setup, no logins, no app to download.
And it's rarely used. OTOH, if video conferencing does become common due to iPhone & FaceTime, the author's point is made.
Sounds to me like they’re first to market, once again, with the right interface. Their insight that other vendors inexplicably can’t seem to understand is that that’s the place to start. Actual robust usefulness can follow.
Apple is very good is giving the “dumb” user what they want and if they want or need more Apple convinces them it’s not ready until Apple tells them it’s ready.
They do know how to market extremely well. The question is will people ever become comfortable taking a couple steps on their own or will they be happy to wait for Apple to do it for them.
Who started this thread who did not ping you? Paranoid much?
Which you haven't done, of course...
I do not agree because there is no company that makes great consumer products like Apple.
That wasn't the claim you made, was it?
Bottom line: Apple does not dominate mobile devices. They are a distant 4th or 5th, at best.
Just speaking as an outside observer ... that bit of silly dishonesty just lost you your whole case.
I can't take seriously a guy who just makes things up out of whole cloth. And for you to be so juvenile about it...
Well, let's put a little perspective on it, Apple delivered and took cash for that many in a few days, but they "sold" them over the period of 3-4 months as it was marketed to the public. Sales is a longer cycle than just the changing of money!
And we also need to realize that ~75% of iPhone 4 buyers are previous owners of iPhones. That means all these iPhone 4s are predominantly going to replace iPhone 3/3GS models. It's not new buyers, it's selling to an existing, already tapped market base. A niced size market base to be sure, but one that is quite limited.
Android phones - being so new - are pretty much only bought by new people. They're winning brand new users with each sale, not converting a previous owner.
And please check forward in the thread; you'll find that BunnySlippers defined it as phones, MP3 players, and portable computers.
Nokia simply cleans up when you look at those 3 markets. Five hundred million cell phones (what Nokia sells) is hard to beat.
Even Samsung and LG and Acer way out-sell Apple in those 3 markets. All of them have 2-3 times more cell phone sales than Apple, and huge numbers for computers and music players as well. It's not even close in terms of number of units.
Apple has good sales volume, but to be considered a market leader - or even in the top 5 - you need to reach past the 100 million mark in units moved. Apple's not there.
That has yet to be proven... If FaceTime was usable over any Internet connection (meaning 3G) and could connect to other clients (like Skype, which has a huge installed base) it might take off. Restricting it to WIFI and other iPhone clients only will most likely leave it as a curious feature, a fun to use feature sometimes, but not a “must have” addition to drive significant sales.
Are you getting paid per post? You have practically hijacked this thread!
Why not do this PugetSoundSoldier: post a round of articles that support your favorite technology platform. Then setup a ping list covering the topic so that we all can subscribe to it!
That way you can focus more of your attention on building up support for your favorite technologies, and spend less of your time tearing down Apple Tech.
You apparently are among the many sarcasm-challenged FReepers.
And to think, I even put a little /sarc tag for your benefit, lol.
You have a very adult Fourth of July, r9etb, you hear? And, do deign to avoid such condescension to people with whom you rarely if ever interact. You just might later find you’ve made a fool of yourself, and we wouldn’t want that.
Anything at all about the out-and-out lies from the pro-Apple people in here? Apple’s inventions and innovations which turned out to be neither? Apple dominating the mobile devices market? No?
Anything at all about how FaceTime is Johnny-come-lately, because Android and Symbian have had this feature for quite a while now?
Didn’t think so. Just another personal attack, like the Macbots like to do...
Yep. Anyone who has an iPhone 4 and wants to try out FaceTime out and about - and doesn't already have a WIFI sniffer - is out of luck.
Facetime is WiFi only, right now, but they plan to bring it to 3G, and Apple has opened up face time to use by any other vendors.
Yes, so you cannot use it at the beach, the park, the grocery store, the kids can't use it as you drive down the road, etc. It needs to work on 3G networks to be effective.
And I don't think too many other vendors will pick it up, because it uses H.264 and you have to pay Apple a license to use it. Skype and Nokia use open CODECs and video formats that are free to use.
Whats so great about face time? From what I hear, it just works. Press a button and there you are, no setup, no logins, no app to download.
Like I said, hey, if downloading and app is too tough then yeah, it's a great thing. I know when I installed Skype on my phone I just browsed to Skype.com, clicked the link to install, and entered my user information once; it now auto-logs in any time I start Skype.
But if installing an app is so difficult, what does that say about the App Store or downloadable applications in general?
I choose to view the nasty anti-Apple spew so prevalent on FR of late to be a positive indicator of the influence FR wields in surprising ways and in areas not political.
I also view it as unintentional validation of Apple as the market leader in every single device it manufactures, otherwise there would be no need for someone out on the Puget Sound in Washington to be taking incessant potshots on every single FR thread that has anything favorable to say about Apple whatsoever.
How’s the weather in Redmond today, by the way? Overcast and grey?
Nope. I have an excellent eye for sarcasm. I also have a good eye for strawman arguments.
Again, you have a very adult Fourth of July, r9etb. You’re stepping in it. I suggest you ignore my replies. It’s worked pretty well up to now.
Someone's got to counter the revisionist history and lies you put forth...;)
Hows the weather in Redmond today, by the way? Overcast and grey?
Wouldn't know - I'm in a small village outside of Chaiyaphum, Thailand right now, visiting some friends for the next few days. But being the 4th of July, and being the Seattle area, there's 90% chance it will be gray and rainy there today! Summer doesn't start in Seattle until the last week of July, and then you better get ready for 4 weeks of sun!
Well thank you for your service, at least. Have a happy Fourth of July and stay out of Phuket, lol.
You clearly have a vested interest in undermining Apple, though, regardless of whether you’re in Washington at present or not.
Have you ever considered subtlety?
Can't stand Phuket... Give me the beaches of Malaysia any day, a lot less Eurotrash walking around...;) And I love the mountains up here in Chaiyaphum (I'm about a 2 hour drive away from the Laotian border).
You clearly have a vested interest in undermining Apple, though, regardless of whether youre in Washington at present or not.
Perhaps it's more a vested interest in the truth? For example, your earlier claim list about the innovation. Even Swordmaker called you on that, as far as color monitors go.
Have you ever considered subtlety?
Most Macbots don't get it...;)
