17:04 - Garmin & Cervelo Leading Peloton
The sprint teams are still in control of the peloton. There were moments when squads with GC riders were at the front - to keep the likes of Armstrong, Schleck(s) and Contador our of trouble - but now the likes of Garmin and Cervelo are setting the pace of the chase.
Pliuschin and Wynants have 20km to go. Katusha now has a reason not to contribute to the pace setting even though Robbie McEwen is a proven winner on the streets of Brussels (having won the Paris-Brussels one-day Classic four times). The leading pair is 55" ahead of the bunch.
Lampre and Katusha are also sending troops forward. But the real pace setting duties have been done by Johan Vansummeren of the Garmin team for the last few kilometers.
17:10 - Milram Send Some Forward
There are now a few Milram riders also getting in on the action at the front of the bunch which is 55" behind Pliuschin and Wynants. The German teams sprinter is Gerald Ciolek, the former under-23 world champion.
With 8.5km to go, the escape is over. The peloton is all together and HTC, Lampre and Cervelo are at the front.
Lampre and HTC-Columbia are the two dominant forces at the front of the peloton but Cervelo and Garmin also have good representation.
17:23 - Maartin Wynants Wins Fighting Spirit Award The Belgian who was on the attack today has been voted the winner of the Fighting Spirit award (otherwise know as the most aggressive riders prize). Maartin Wynants will wear a red dossard in the second stage.
After he sat on Pliuschin's wheel for the last hour?

Not to take anything away from Petacchis win but the first stage of the 2010 will be remembered for the crashes in the final kilometers. It ruled out well over half the peloton and there are riders now walking to the finish.
17:31 - Petacchi Racing For Win...
Petacchi has survived the carnage and taken his first stage win at the Tour since 2003.
17:29 - Garmin In Charge
Cavendish is not going to win today. Hes gesturing to the camera thats life and hes rolling in behind the bunch which is now less than 1km from the line.
17:28 - Crash In Peloton
There has been a crash on a right turn. Petacchi, Cavendish and Freire have been caught up... as has Hunt of Cervelo.
17:34 - Cancellara To Keep Yellow
Although numerous riders came down in the finale, Fabian Cancellara will keep his yellow jersey. He was caught behind the crash in the final straight but as it happened inside the final three kilometers he wont lose any time.
17:32 - Petacchi, Renshaw & Hushovd - 1st, 2nd & 3rd The winners time is 5 hours, nine minutes and 38 seconds for an average speed of 43.3km/h. The top this is: 1. Alessandro Petacchi (ITA) LAM 2. Mark Renshaw (AUS) THR 3. Thor Hushovd (NOR) CTT
Have you ever seen a course blocking crash? Wow. Wonder what was going on other than that sharp right turn?

Hey Vision! Haven’t seen a road-blocker like that! Narrow road at a turn, damn.
LOL
Who needs NASCAR when you have The TDF?
No kidding! The dog probably stood a better chance at the TdF, tho; haven’t heard how he fared in the crash.
Honestly, I don’t understand how a TdF fan (presumably that’s why they were out there) could be so inconsiderate as to let their dog mill around that crowd and this event. Imagine if that was you, and your dog caused two riders to crash. That’s just unbelievable.
Dog invades Tour - Video - Culprit apprehended, shame, shame, to bed with you and no supper. Well it is Holland, everyone who has had a part in raising the dog will feel shame and wonder what they did to make him go bad and the dog will get off with a stern glance.
The first breakaway of the Tour inspired by one of the wild dogs of Holland who has since dropped out for want of a sponsor.
