Yes, but, the gator has more force to bring the pit bull under water.

Guess I like gators...but of course, not in my neighborhood.

I think the government should put a bounty on gators and crocs, Idon't even care if they an endangered species or not. Next thing you know they will eat some kid... A bounty would get rid of them fast...They are almost as bad as coons....

Glad it didn't get you....:O)

” The pit bull has genetic tendencies that make it particularly troublesome. A dog that has been a family pet for ten years will all of a sudden turn and maul the wife (he used the example of “wife”).

- Pit bulls have 2500 lbs per square inch of jaw pressure. Their jaws are incredible biting machines of muscle and tendon. By comparison, a German Sheppard has 1500 pounds per square inch of bite pressure.”

Wow, I am sorry but your shelter director sounds like a biased, uneducated fool. The whole jaw pressure thing has been disproven, and if this supposed expert were anything of the sort, he would have known this, as the results of such tests can be easily found online.

Pit bulls have a WEAKER bite than German Shepherds and Rottweilers, and the bite pressure of the average dog is around 320 psi, according to Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic (Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force, 8pm est 8/18/2005). Here is an excerpt from the video if you want to see it:

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/531069/bite_force_competition_pitbull_rottweiler_and_shepherd/

As for the “family pet for years” quote, it is also very common for this to be reported in the news as the God’s honest truth, but many of us who follow up on these stories find with a quick call to animal control that the dog in question was either outside chained up all the time, already had a record for running loose/unlicensed/no rabies shots/previous bite, and, was in many cases, an intact male. Real family pets are not kept this way. They are inside most of the time, socialized, trained, and kept healthy. Responsible dog owners do not allow their pets to become vicious because they bothered to learn about the kind of care their particular dog required BEFORE they got one.

By the way, many shelter directors have little or nothing to do with the actual shelters, having degrees in business management far more often than animal behavior, genetics, biology, or any other study relevant to the job. They are in control of the profit side, not the welfare and education side, and often will only visit shelters a few times a month (if that often). Shelter managers should be there most of the time, but I have seen several situations in which they too were out most of the day or week. It is pretty common to have an entire government-run operation full of people that don’t know anything about the animals they are getting paid to help, which is why it’s nice that people volunteer. At least for some portion of that time, some of the animals might have a shot at some clean water, an hour in a tight space without having to stand in urine, and the possibility that someone with a brain in their head will walk by and notice that the “rottweiler/greyhound mix” card should say “doberman”. I can’t count how many times I have seen dogs misidentified, especially named as rare breeds or mixes that are very unlikely to be found running loose. I would like to believe it is the shelter worker’s way of trying to make the dog more marketable, but unfortunately, five minutes worth of discussion with these people and you can gather that they just pretty much close their eyes and point to something on the breed chart, or put whatever pops into their heads at the time.

It is pretty sad that in this day and age, everyone is a self-proclaimed expert, with nothing to prove it. Please remember that the source is just as important as the information it contains!

You are believing yourself without doing the necessary research to find out if the source is trustworthy.

“A mighty assumption you make having never met the man.”<<<<

I did not say the man YOU spoke with was one of the many shelter directors that don’t have any education related to the field. However, I don’t see that it matters, considering his words of wisdom fall very short of the truth, which is proof enough to me that whatever education he did receive was not enough, and that he is one of the reasons people still believe a breed of dog is somehow supernaturally strong, schizophrenic, and somehow able to fool us all into thinking they’re creampuffs. People in power aren’t always smart. Smart people don’t always seek power. I have done years of reading, research, and hands-on time involving this subject, and I know when I come across someone that doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Your shelter director is one of them.

Maybe we will be better sticking with facts rather than saying we know the qualifications of every shelter director to weigh in on the subject.

If the shelter director I talked to is to be believed, half of the dogs they take in are pit bulls and are put down. Sounds like half the cost just so people can own the dang things.

“Maybe we will be better sticking with facts rather than saying we know the qualifications of every shelter director to weigh in on the subject. “<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Again, even though you used my quote to respond back to me, you seemed to have forgotten to read it. I did not say I knew what qualifications this person had. I DID say that they weren’t enough, based on the FACT that his statements were patently false. He should know better than to spout off his opinion as fact. He is spreading misinformation, and people are obviously buying his bs because of the title he holds. This kind of crap pisses people like me off because we spend most of our lives finding out the facts using sources that are reputable, only to have some idiot blowhard come along and ruin things because he THINKS he knows what the heck he’s talking about! It seems to me nowadays people would just rather stay stupid than take the extra five minutes required to find out the truth.

“If the shelter director I talked to is to be believed, half of the dogs they take in are pit bulls and are put down. Sounds like half the cost just so people can own the dang things.”<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This is the only thing your director said that is actually true. Indeed there are shelters with over 60% of their intakes being pit bulls right now. This is only further proof that dog owners are irresponsible. They get a puppy, thinking it’s cute or going to be a great guard dog, or whatever the case, then quickly realize that they have no idea how to train it. It then becomes a yard dog, but only long enough to start chewing everything in sight. Then it’s a chained 24/7 dog which is thrown food and no one wants to get near it because it was never even taught not to jump on people. After that, the brilliant minds that decided to get this dog and subsequently allow it to stay in the yard despite the fact that it’s “untrainable”, allow their two year old to go spend some quality time alone with the dog, and voila! You have a trip to the pound and a nice, well-rounded media report of a family dog that just snapped.

This is not just a hobby for me. I have been working with dogs for years, and I AM educated in the field I am in. I see what comes in, sometimes months after seeing the same freaking dogs adopted out as puppies! I see them leave happy, healthy, friendly, and full of life, and I see them come back skinny, scared, scarred-up, and hopeless. I see their half-wit, lazy, good-for-nothing owners come in and give excuse after excuse of why their dog is just too much for them (that is, if the dogs aren’t being brought in on poles or in trash bags), even though they signed paperwork just a short time ago saying they would keep the dog inside, train it, and seek help for behavior problems.

Until PEOPLE are held accountable, dogs will continue to bite and be blamed 100% for it. I am sick and tired of people putting so much effort into defending these jackasses! Why? Are you getting paid for it? What’s in it for you that you would rather blame a dog and continue to have innocent children mauled because people are lured into a false sense of security?? Why don’t you want a real solution?

I swear to God, this country and the rest of the world is DOOMED because no one gives a crap about doing the right thing anymore.
