This has become a nation of old biddies. The worst part is most of them are men. Or male at any rate.

“jury rig” It's really called “Gerry rig.”

Oxford English Dictionary dates "jury-mast: a temporary mast put up to replace one that has been broken away" to 1616. Prior to the World Wars, and indeed Germany.

The weather here in Texas has made me stay as close to the a/c vents as possible. Weather is powerful! Do you think Carl Rove is still in charge of the weather machine or does a democrat have it now?

I think if the Democrats had the Rove Machine, they’d be making some Global Warming. Everyone’s “coldest, wettest Spring” is making them look really dumb.

On the other hand, maybe they just don’t know how to work it.

his journey was a piece of cake compared to what she faced."

So her parents picked out the "easy" solo-circumnavigation of the world for their sixteen year old son....but then went to Google and found the "impossible" solo-navigation of the world route for the daughter....Columbus, Magellen, Cook and a few others are LTAO in their graves....piece of cake indeed.

As far as I'm aware, neither Magellen or Cook took the easy short cut across Panama through the canal

Zac's was the easy "trade wind" route. Abby's was the harder Southern Ocean "clipper ship" route - not for young inexperienced novices.

"As far as I'm aware, neither Magellen or Cook took the easy short cut across Panama through the canal"

So that kept him from going around Cape Horn and up the western side of South America....a route that his sister easily navigated and had nothing to do with the trouble that caused her to lose a mast......my point was that it is a little bit silly to characterize the solo-circumnavigation of the world by a 16-17 year old as a "piece of cake"....no matter what the route....what time of year...what type of equipment was used. Most folks would agree with my position.
