Thanks for the info. I really didn’t know much about them other than, for the price, they have a decent reputation for being reliable. Like the OP, I’m also attracted to the price of ammunition right now. 1000 rounds for about $200.

All of my friends with AR based weapons have far more trouble with them than those with AR based weapons.I think you meant one of those ARs to be an AK. But I don't know which.

During my 4 years in the Marine Corps I never had one jam, failure or anything else of the M16’s that I carried. We fired alot of live rounds and blanks.
Didn’t even have any parts break. I’d buy the AR15 over the AK74 because of ammo availability and all the neat stuff you can do with an AR nowadays. It’s a great platform.
Accurate too.

Well price that against a quality AR with the addition of a quality add-on piston recoil system from someone like Adams, and see how much you'll have to spend!
If you'll add a recoil piston system to an AR, she'll be right-as-rain. No more FTFs, or FTEs!
The lack of the recoil-piston system has been the M16/AR-15 functiono problemas from the git-go.

Its a great platform.Ya,, its a tough choice,, but .223 ammo is currently way higher than 5.45x39. That is why I'm looking for the AK74. I have heard that in quality Ak74's,, the accuracy is near an AR. Plus,, I dislike the gas system on AR's...no offense,,I'm a mechanic and like simple.

The guns I have are strictly for a SHTF scenario. The calibers I have now are 308, 30-06, 7.62X39 and 7.62X54R.
I want something in 5.56. If the Obama does hit the fan, I think it’ll be easier to find 5.56 than it will be AK74 ammo.

I am keeping an eye on the new piston AR’s. Waiting to see how they hold up. I saw the special on the History Channel they did with the HK piston AR. Very impressive.

A Mitchell’s mauser refurb. so not really a collectible. Shoots very well. Still shoots very well after I knocked it off a table (the Mosin did it! haha) and broke the stock. It now has a used russian(?) capture stock on it.

I just like the feel of old iron and wood. Pretty heavy to haul around, though!
