Exactly-there's enough blame to go around and I think it is time Americans (especially, Americans) get hip to the fact that discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, etc. is not unique to America and is not of recent origin.

People have been rotten to each other from the beginning of time and will continue so non-stop on this side of eternity. Humans are hard wired to take unnecessary and unfair advantage of the weak, the few the vulnerable and THAT will not change, ever!!

That said... minorities in the U.S. have it better and have had it better LONGER than minorities anywhere else in the world.. and you can take that to the bank, whatever color you are!!

She was a very lovely lady with a lovely voice and spirit. I will try to find as many of her performances as I can and watch them with my baby girl.

I just went looking to see if I could find a list of movies she was in and found it very incomplete. I remember as a kid (a very, very long time ago) watching movies on Saturday TV and seeing her all the time. I had to actually Google Porgy and Bess to find that performance so you are going to have to do a lot of searching.

You could do no greater service to your daughter than to introduce her to the elegance and grace that Lena Horne represented.

You are right. I read about her being cut out of movies in the south years ago,etc... I always admired her as a stunningly beautiful woman with amazing talent who persevered. It’s funny, I was thinking about her just the other day, wondering if she was still alive....

If anyone reads the truth and gets offended by it, I wager it is their own guilt bubbling up to the surface

It has nothing to do with guilt, it’s the constant emphasis on white racism of the distant past that’s getting pretty much unbearable to us whites, in particular us white males.

You say racism of the distant past is fact, so we should just deal with the constant references to it? OK, but it should work both ways.

Maybe the following scenario will let you know how a lot of us (whites) feel about this subject.

My former boss, and current good friend, had a son-in-law die last year from a allergic reaction to an over-the-counter pain med. Imagine if his obituary had read like this…

Dr. Christopher X, died last Thursday. Dr. X had recently completed medical school, with honors, despite the major obstacles placed before white male medical students from discriminatory quotas and affirmative action programs favoring less qualified blacks and other minorities…

Would you like seeing things like this constantly? It's factual, and it's a lot more current than the racism Lena Horne experienced in the '40s and '50s (long before I was born).

to state that Dr. X faced less qualified blacks and minorities is sheer conjecture unless you knew the qualifications of every minority Dr. who attended school with Dr. X. Assuming that the minority is less qualified because they are a minority is bigoted.

Yep, by today's standards, I'm a bigot...

White skin... check

Pride in myself and my ancestors... check

No guilt for historical events I had no part in... check

Openly recognizing the truth that you don't have affirmative action programs and quotas to promote equally qualified minorities over whites and asians, you have them to advance those that can't (or won't) compete on a level playing field... check

I’m glad you are proud of yourself. I DO NOT agree with affirmative action either. If we eliminate affirmative action we take away the basis of the bigot’s argument.

As usual if a great American entertainer passes we have M. Steyn to put it in perspective.

RIP and Godspeed Ms. Horne.
