I'm not trying to make excuses to get this girl off; she deserves to be held accountable but . . . .
This is an airheaded 18 year old who does not grasp the meaning of what she is saying. This was a bad accident caused by her bad behavior. Charge and punish her based on that but grabbing at statements like this doesn't do anyone any good.
This girl is a prime example of how bad lifestyle choices and decisions can lead to horrible but unintended accidents. Hopefully her time in jail will give her a chance to stop, realize what she has done and get out of that lifestyle.

At 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, about 16 hours after the Tuesday morning accident, in a statement to police, Gerdes was quoted as saying: "The thing that made me feel not so bad was she was old. "I mean, 70 years is a long time to live." I would like to see her perspective on this after she lives to 70 years in jail.

With you. She’s just a stupid kid who was saying in a very stupid way she’s glad she didn’t hit a child, the van was that out of control.
She’s going to be charged on killing someone while DUI. That is the point, and that’s what to focus on.
