Check out the Winchester 1300 Defender. Reasonably priced and extremely scary. Get the model with the High Vis optical front sight.

Legacy generally imports decent stuff, but I have an innate distrust of cheapo shotguns. I've had enough of them fail in my hands to say, "No, thank you," when one is presented. A good, used 870, 500, or 590 can be had for around $300. These guns are mass produced and mass marketed, which lowers the price of used examples.
Couple important points:
Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. For this, and other important, VERIFIABLE information about what shotguns can do, visit the shotgun tests at the website The Box O' Truth. Among other things, they demonstrate shot spread at distance and explain why you can not point a shotgun in the general direction of the target and expect to accomplish anything.
In other words, don't put a pistol grip on it unless you have some special reason for wanting to miss your target.

Thank you. That “rack the slide” crap can get you killed.

Mossberg 590 Mariner is my choice.
Like the position of the safety and bolt release buttons on the Mossy better than the Remmy 870. Vang makes an oversized safety for the Mossberg which makes it even more instinctive to use.

I think `Guns’ mag reviewed it and gave it a thumbs up.
I would have gone with it if I hadn’t bought the Maverick.

Very good advise, thanks for your input. I’m still kicking this around for now.

A Remington 870 is a safe bet, but here's my home defense weapon, a Winchester Model 97 riot shotgun:

If they slimed 870 shotguns, better ask them about interior decoration and blow them off of gun advice.

I forgot to say...”what does it matter what I think”.
I’m sure it doesn’t ...I was just trying to share my experience.
Truly...I didn’t mean to offend.

Having the rounds is a definite plus, but if you get into a situation that calls for 8+, use the butt of the gun to break out a window and run like hell!

I’d look for a second barrel from Corson’s Barrels or Barrel Exchange to make the mod on.

PS: Pistol grips look cool but really hurt the versatility of a shotgun.
