My girlfriend at the time (1967) called it “the dinner song.”
We used to sing along with most songs that played on the radio as we drove along, but that one always brought total silence.

They made a movie on it about maybe 20 -25 years ago I guess. Billy Joe was to put it kindly molested by a drunk man at a county fair and was having trouble dealing with it. What was thrown from the bridge was the girls doll thrown by Billy Joe in a moment of anger while they were arguing. Yes she was pregnant by him and the movie shows her leaving town till the child is born at the end of the movie.
