For some reason, the Paul Simon song comes to mind.....
I remember her rendition of the anthem at Super Bowl XXV — lip-synched or not, it was simply stirring. What a shame her life’s taken such a turn.
I have to agree its sad talent gone to waste. It’s like the Rushbo says life is all about choices.
Thanks for your analysis.
I’ve listened to Whitney over the decades and while I appreciated her range I always wondered why I’d cringe when she “belted” certain notes. It just wasn’t pretty. Not to mention overdoing those “Cadenzas”. Maybe it’s a black thing but I couldn’t appreciate it. She was always hoarse when interviewing too. No wonder.

Back in the Day, when I was studying Voice with my Brilliant Voice teacher, The two of us wanted to fly down to Atlanta and RESCUE Whitney from whatever Vocal Coach it was who was advising her!
Alas, having seen the direction my beloved Nation has taken in recent years, I doubt if Whitney would have listed to ME.
I may be from the same neighborhood as her worthless husband, but not the same ethnicity, so WHAT DO I KNOW about R&B singing? Or Politics for that matter? LOL.
I am getting a bumper sticker that has merely 4 qords on it:
I TOLD YOU SO. :-)
I doubt she would have listened to you or anyone for that matter. She wouldn’t listen to her Aunt or even her own Mother Sissy.
Whitney quickly blew up into “Diva” status and the rest is history.
If she could just shake her demons maybe we could get some mellow R&B in her later years. Dion Warwick had some of her greatest hits during those years. She smoked like a fiend too. Didn’t matter. My MIL saw Dion and Bert Bacharach in concert about 10 years ago. She said it was like going back 30+ years.
I certainly hope so!
I am over 50 and still have 4 octaves. I hit high “c”s every day and have no breaks in my voice.
I really believe in the technique that I teach because I am living proof that it WORKS! LOL
Say a prayer for Whitney. She needs THAT more than our criticism. :-)
"Six months ago I met a girl and she was taking singing lessons... and her coach, an eighty-four year-old guy-- you'd think would be the last guy in the world to be weird, but LISTEN TO THIS: he kept wanting her to SING... from her DIAPHRAGM! ...I mean that would take YEARS to learn that, wouldn't it?" - Steve Martin
LOL!
The diaphragm is only ONE factor! I teach kids to sing from their KNEECAPS!
Maybe you should send her record producer Clive Davis a letter. It couldn’t hurt.
Yes, prayers can change everything. Just a little push could be all she needs. She already knows the Truth.
Good on you with your voice. I’m over 50 as well. A song will come on the radio and those high C’s coming out of my lungs just don’t sound like they used to, if they come out at all ;D!
Interesting you should say that!
I produced a Singer who wanted SO MUCH to sound like Whitney that she was imitating her. As I sat under the headphones, I could hear all the breaks and “tricks” and I KNEW exactly what she was up to. her Manager, who had worked with Clive, kept urging her on and encouraging her to do this stuff.
Every time I tried to say something, I got squashed.
They knew what they wanted, and even though I was the producer and had over twenty years Vocal Training and Experience, it was as if I knew NOTHING.
Needless to say, the Recording went NOWHERE.
Too bad. Sounds like all they wanted was a new artist with a marketable sound, and a new contract with upside down “points” on their side at any expense, Artist’s voice be damned!
I sure you have many good stories to share over a glass of wine or tea if you will. Quite an interesting field of work.
I’m hoping Pink won’t burn up her lungs too early. Her talent is wonderful and she can write.
Happens all the time.
I can’t stand it when I see kids “Belting out a tune”. And they get encouraged to do so. It is the worst possible thing for their voice.
The volume control should be in the BRAIN, not the LUNGS!
Just a peek into the technique. :-)
That’s your opinion. She never did anything for me.
“I liked her in the movie Bodyguard “
That was the zenith of her career.
That’s your opinion.
