There is no way that any of the shots from the shotgun hit the dog. Up here on occasion a coyote meets up with some 00 pellets. They don't go more than a few feet before they drop.

Sounds like the dog was moving quickly and towards the officers and was hard to hit.

dogs have genetic backgrounds that determine much of their personality and temperment...Pits genetic history sucks and the dogs are unpredictable...Yep its always everyone’s fault except the dog of peace. Like the religion of peace. smile at you one minute and decapitate you the next.

My guess is the initial poor shot disabled the dog’s pain receptors, or directly damaged its brain. Either way, this can be summed up as very poor marksmanship.

And yeah, I agree, a pit bull does not mean evil killer dog. A dog does not kill for mean-ness or revenge. It goes through a decision tree that is as cold as a machine, and when it arrives at its conclusion, there is no emotion, it just executes the results of the decision.

It just so happens that pit bulls have the energy, size, and the dominance mentality that if not well trained and disciplined, they can end up killers. Ie., pit bulls aren’t for idiot owners who think their dog is a child when it comes to how they socialize and handle them.

A nice meat ball soaked in anti-freeze should do the trick...layed real close to the fence in the corner would do the trick...they'd use their paws to get to it through the fence....don't like pits or raccoons.

Owners are the responsible party! I've been pestered by pit bulls, with the owner present to control him, but I wouldn't want to encounter that animal alone! Yet I have been just as intimidated by a pair of Dobermans, while working on a farm. The owners had them patrolling the property 24/7. I was only too glad to leave when my work was done!

You want to outlaw pit bulls, then you've got to include Dobermans and quite a few more breeds. Collies are well known for developing a bad temperament when abused or neglected. It's not the size that makes a dog dangerous though. I'd love to live in Switzerland and own a St. Bernard!

My sister is pregnant, and they have a little girl, my neice. If that beast hurts either of them, they won't need animal control for the dog...

Too big a risk to wait. The phrase "Pre-emptive Strike" comes to mind - when it is on your property of course - or loose anywhere near it.

Killed well over 20. Couldn’t really say how many for sure cause I didn’t keep a tab. Of course, we’re talking about living in the country and shooting dogs killing chickens or attacking livestock.

Also, killed a few of our own dogs that attacked people or family, so yeah, I killed a few dogs in my time.

Actually that is a cruel death, very painful. Can be done with an overdose of Valium or some other barbiturate. Of course that would be wrong and illegal.....

I do apologize for suggesting that, but if they were my neighbor and I had children, I wouldn't care about the dog.Its not just pits that can be a problem. I had a neighbor with 2 Shelties...Everytime we tried to use the back yard, (that had a deck and pool) those 2 yappers would make such a racket at the fence it got quite aggravating...They were very nice people, we had no other problems with them...Had them over for coffee and they had us over for coffee. Finally my hubby talked with the man of the house and explained he'd like to put up a 6 foot wood fence down that side of the yard and explained why. We got his permission and he was not offended but understood.

If those yappers would have been pits, it would have been a whole different story about them charging our common fence.

Dogs were undisciplined, one bit the neighbor on the other side and one got out the door when one of my son's was getting out of the car. Son was over 6 foot and could take care of himself and he waited until the dog was almost on him and dropped kicked the SOB back onto his own front yard. Again with pits the story might have been different, but then again I think hubby would have personally shot the SOB.

The breed of the dog coming after you makes a big difference between a nasty bite and a trip to the ER to have a surgeon try to put your kids face back together

“When that failed to stop the dog, three officers fired a total of seven .40-caliber pistol rounds, which finally killed the animal...”

“Excuse me, Sir, is this your dog?”

“Nah, my dog doesn’t have that many holes in it.”

hehehe, Well I love dogs, however they are animals and sometimes you must do what you have to to protect yourself and your family. I am sure those sweet pit bulls are cuddly little pets to someone. But if he is attacking me or another any amount of force will be used to stop it, regardless of the owners feelings.

“It’s not the breed, it’s the owner in 3...2...1...”

Yet again, a story involving dogs running loose, which means the owners were irresponsible. Who knows what else they neglected to do with the dogs. The fact that there were two of them makes me wonder if they were a breeding pair, not that it matters. Two dogs running loose, even dogs of the same sex, have that pack mentality, which can be dangerous.

Dog experts and professionals involved in public safety point to irresponsible ownership as the main cause of incidents like this, as well as acknowledging the fact that popularity of a particular breed with the wrong people has ruined several breeds in the public eye (as well as the physical health of the breeds involved), but they always move on to another breed after the “thug” breed gets boring or something new comes to their attention.
