I remember when I was a little kid, when ketchup and coffee creamers and jelly first started coming out with individual size packaging, my dad saying that the person that invented this should be commited to a lifetime of sitting in the dark opening them!

Some things just stick in your head!

Except for Del Monte, I can't tell any difference between the major brands and generics

tomatos were designated as being, technically, a fruit by congress in the late 1800’s(?). not sure of the date.

“Except for Del Monte, I can’t tell any difference between the major brands and generics”

There are very few items that I will buy name brand over generic or store brands. Ketchup is one of them. Gotta be Heinz! (Charmin is another, but now I’m getting personal, LOL)

Could this have something to do with Jim Gaffigan’s briliant comedy routine? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4MFngowjPg

The Tariff Act of 1883 charged taxes on vegetables but not fruits. If Nix v. Hedden the Supreme Court decided that the terms fruit and vegetable in the law referred to the culinary definitions and not to the botanical ones. Since tomatoes are served in the main part of the meal instead of dessert they are vegetables.

The size is almost big enough now for some gin soaked raisins in easy to carry snack packs.

Did you see that they have a “dipping” side now, so you can open the packet and dip your fries into the packet rather than having to smear ketchup all over the fries?

Of course, when I used to do catsup while driving, I’d just eat some fries, and then suck some catsup out of the packets.

That was before I thought about who might have touched the packets.

Never thought about home made ketchup, guess it just seemed like one of those things that required a masters in chemistry to produce, sorta like twinkies

ketchup is easy. just grow your own tomatos and find a good ketchup recipe. an older one if you can find it. you can also buy a pre-measured packet of ketchup spices in some stores. i am told these are quite good.
twinkies on the other hand were created by alien scientists and cannot be produced by normal humans.

Good. Now I will only need 3-4 of the new packs for onion rings or fries. It was a pain squeezing out a dozen packs to get a serving.
